I plan to study journalism this fall but am very split on where to go. I think that documentary journalism would be super interesting, but they only have that specific major at Mizzou. I also want to double major in creative writing with a focus on film and television. I am honors at Mizzou and was very impressed by their journalism program when touring, but not in love with the campus. I overall liked UFs campus better, but I am worried I might not have as many connections as I would at Mizzou. I’m out of state at both so there isn’t a large difference in cost. PLEASE HELP ME DECIDE!
Are you accepted into the Journalism major at MU or do you have to qualify? If you are accepted to MU’s Journalism program, I would go with MU especially since they have the major that you desire. Mizzou’s Journalism program is highly regarded and College Factual ranks their program 3 (UF- 52) and NewsPro Magazine ranks MU as #1 and UF #8 (combined with their Communications department). When did you visit MU? Missouri had an awful winter (the worst in years) and that extended into our Spring. If you think you might change your major or if you feel a colder climate will be detrimental to your mental health then UF might be the best choice. You might also want to consider how hard it will be to get to each campus from your home and the transportation if any that you need to have at either college.
You cannot do better than Mizzou for Journalism.
Mizzou is famous in the world of journalism (particularly TV). Its students are so well connected and represented in the industry that they’re called the Mizzou Mafia.
I got into the Journalism major as an honors student, but you don’t apply for the specific documentary journalism major until later. Yes, I visited in the winter.
I’d go to Mizzou.
For your intended course of study, Missouri is the better option.
Congrats. Mizzou and see you at the Oscars!
Ah! I’m so conflicted! I don’t know why I don’t feel as drawn to Mizzou, but feel like I am sacrificing my career if I choose Florida. Hopefully, I have a revelation before May 1st…
@laurenb6464 I think it’s unfortunate that you visited Mizzou in the winter. The campus is usually ranked as one of the most beautiful campuses. Did you see the Tiger Grotto when you visited?
Mizzou, by far - Honors + Journalism means you actually have a shot at working in your chosen profession. They’re so connected you won’t regret it. And the campus really isn’t so bad - you must have been on a bad day.
Since there’s not enough time for you to revisit in person…
