Mizzzzzzzou

I'm really interested in Mizzou, but I'm worried that people wont be there on the weekends, and the social scene in general.
Can anyone tell me about what the dorms are like? The social scene?

My daughter goes to Mizzou. Academically, she has been very happy there. Socially, it took her a semester to find her happy place. Greek life is big at Mizzou, and if you don't mind being greek, it's actually cheaper to live in one of their beautiful houses after the 1st year than to live in a dorm.

The dorms vary in quality, but all of them are reasonable to live in, and the university is slowly replacing aging dorms with really nice new ones. Mizzou also has one of the top ranked fitness centers in the country.

Mizzou is one of those schools that looks like you expect a college to look. Very pretty campus, a lot of cool older architecture.

Football weekends offer the usual tailgaiting and sports fun.

Drinking is prevelant, you can always find a party at Mizzou, and you need to be careful to find balance in your social life. A lot of the kids come into Mizzou with friends from their high schools, so some of the kids from other states might feel like social groups are hard to break into. You just need to be patient, there are plenty of potential friends looking for you too.

Mizzou offers out of staters $5500 per year , renewable for 4 years, with certain academic credentials, and my daughter scored a $1500 Chicago chapter alumni scholarship freshman year, and another $1500 this year on a private scholarship.

I am about to leave for Mizzou in five days! I live in Tennessee, so I definitely am taking a big risk going to a state university in another state. I know that a lot of kids come from St. Louis, Kansas City and even Chicago and already have their group of friends. I know that it is a very Greek school (I am not going Greek my freshman year). Am I a little concerned? Yes. But I am really really excited. Its a beautiful campus with wonderful facilities. The J-School (I am a Journalism major) is just unbelievable and I'm so excited to participate. The Freshman Interest Group program, where you take two or three of the same classes as the people on your floor who have a common major or interest, is a really great way to meet people off the bat. I have a slight panic every now and then, like "Oh no I'm not going to make any friends and I'm just going to be so lonely all the time". But I think everyone feels like that at first. It really is a great school. Its not too pretentious academically but its very solid, particularly the J-School. There are so many ways to get involved on campus and the students in general are friendly, outgoing and fun-loving. The surrounding town, Columbia, is small but downtown is really cool and eclectic and fun, and you can walk right there from campus in like two minutes.

So all in all, I think its definitely a school worth checking into, especially if you are interested in journalism.

Congratulations! Mizzou is indeed one the premier schools for journalism, and if you
are a journalism major, you probably don't need the sorority. You will find plenty of like minded friends in your special interest goup.

Have a great year.
