Mmss

I'm applying to the MMSS program (Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences). Has anyone here had any experience with it that could tell me more about it?

Advice: ask the program director to refer you to some students in the program. I have a few friends in it but they don't talk enough about it so that I can give an informed description. However, they seem to like it!

I'm applying to enter the program as a freshman, so that makes talking to current students a little more difficult. I have emailed the program director with some questions, but it's Thanksgiving break so I probably won't get a response for a few days at least.

Very tough math classes, that's about all I've heard.

I'm in MMSS, it's some good stuff. What else do you need to know?

I'd like to know all I can. I've read everything on the website, but I can't seem to find any info besides what's there.

How good are the classes? How are they typically set up? How accessible are the professors? What kind of students are in the program?

What are your favorite things about MMSS? Your least favorite? What do you wish you knew before entering the program?

Thanks for offering to answer questions and please forgive me for being an information junkie.

The classes are pretty good, but pretty hard. For my statistics class the book says "10 chapters are more than enough for a full year advanced course in statistics." We took 8 of the 10 in one quarter...

You take the classes as described on the website - 2 years of 2 classes a quarter, and then a research thesis your senior year. Classes tend to be heavy on problem sets (you have one each week averaging 5-7 pages.)

The professors are pretty accessible. Some of them are Kellogg profs teaching MMSS classes.

Students in the program tend to be above average in ambition and smartness, so it's a really competitive program.

I like almost everything in the program - the fast pace and the challenge. Also the much more practical orientation and the opportunities an mmss major gives you (lots of good employers give presentations and recruit exclusively MMSS students at NU.) On the downside some complain the program ruins your GPA (that is you would do better just doing Econ.)

I entered the program as a sophomore so I pretty much knew everything useful there was to know. I wish I knew about the program before I applied so that I could have started as a freshman, but a lot of people start as sophomores so it is not such a big deal.

I know the feeling. After we finished 10 chapters in 9 weeks, our teacher told us we needed to speed up because we were falling behind. What sort of practically oriented things have you done as part of mmss?

I saw the list of recruiters on the website. There are some very impressive names on there. What do most MMSS grads do post-graduation? What are your post-grad plans?

I saw that they are planning on expanding the program to 60 this year, but continuing to offer only one section of each class. What effect do you think this will have on the classes?

Thanks again for being so helpful.

How hard is it to get into the program?

what is it?

do a search of the topics... there was one really good thread that explained it in detail

question to those applying/in the MMSS program. For the application, did you handwrite the entire thing since it was all paper...including the essays? Also do you know if they look at your normal NU app as well.

bump (10 chars)

How hard is it to get in?

I'm typing up the essays, then printing them out and taping them on. If I can figure out a way to type it directly on the application, I will.

"Northwestern’s Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences Program (MMSS) provides excellent preparation for the Kellogg certificate program in Financial Economics. Students completing the two-year sequence of required courses in the MMSS program automatically satisfy all the prerequisites for the Kellogg certificate program."
