I live in Minnesota, and am illegal. My mother and father both are illegal and legally divorced in this state. My mom has paid taxes with her ITTIN number. I have worked throught highschool and have paid taxes with my ITTIN number as well. I have lived as an American- speak perfect English, Spanish, and some French- I am well versed. The only thing standing in my way of attending a higher educational institution is my financial status. I am eligible to get the Minnesota State Grant, Minnesota defines a resident (which is the only requirement- aside financial need) as "Graduated from a Minnesota high school while residing in Minnesota and physically attending a Minnesota college. " That is the criteria- I've lived in MN for my entire education and will be attending a MN college. How do I get this grant?! It says to go through FAFSA- BUT I can't file a FAFSA because im illegal and so is my mother. We have ITTIN numbers with a good history of taxes paid. Can I do ANYTHING with this? I need help! I only financial aid for the first one or two years- all I need is help getting my foot through the door. I don't know if anyone knows of any scholarships that don't require citizenship, if you do- please tell me of them! GPA- 3.0 ACT-26 very involved- student council, youth commission, sports and many others. THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!!!!

All financial aid through the government (federal or state) requires you to be a US Citizen and to file the FAFSA. What about a Mexican University?

JamesJr- Thanks, but are you sure that I cant get the MN State Grant? Eligibility says I have to have had lived here for my highschool education and attend a MN college- that makes me a resident in this state. Thats also why I have SOME hope- MN is one of the few states that will let me pay resident tuition:) So that is my main “issue”- I am allowed to pay residential tuition, so If I am seen as a resident can’t I get the grant as well? Since we have paid all our taxes?

You need to talk to someone who knows the MN State Grant eligibility rules very well. I can tell you that many grants use FAFSA as a clearing house before they do issue grants. If you are an illegal immigrant, your best bet is to apply as an international student for financial aid. Because you can get state rates for college, the MN state schools are a good deal for you. But any scholarships going through FAFSA will not be awarded to you.
