Moar chances . . . why not?

Just about wrapping up my applications, and decided to take a break/ finally post a chances thread.

Here are my stats:

Test Scores

ACT (36)
SAT II's (US History 800, Math 2 800)

School

Illinois public

4/464 Rank
4.43 Weighted GPA
3.91 Unweighted GPA

Courseload: 4 AP's Junior Year, 5 AP

Extracurriculars:

Student Council/Class President (9,10,11,12)
Forensics (Debate, Individual Events) (9,10 Captain 11 12)
Academic Team/Science Olympiad/WYSE (Captain 9,10,11, 12)
Band (Wind Ensemble/ Jazz Band/ Marching Band) (9,10,11,12) 1st Chair Trombone, President
NHS

100 hrs community service (Library shelf-reading, soup kitchen)

Ron Paul Presidential Campaign Precinct Leader (wrote my essays about this)

AMC 10/12 School Winner (9,10,11)
NMSQT Semifinalist

I applied to the following early:

The University of Chicago (EA) (this is the my uber-dream school)
University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (Early Response)

and am now in the process of applying to the following:

Swarthmore College
Columbia University
Johns Hopkins University
Northwestern University
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (safety)

as well as Harvard and Yale to appease my parents.

Your thoughts, o wise and might CC community?

dashes off to grind out more essays

just a tip. UoC will not think of you higher because of your excellent test score on the ACT. IT"S ALL ABOUT THE ESSAY! TRUST ME!

i see u being accepted to all the schools besides Yale and Swarthmore, maybe harvard. Interestingly enough UoC is probably borderline for you. However, if you write a solid essay and pur your heart out, then your a lock

it’s funny, because I first fell in love with the University of Chicago back when I was a wee freshman because of, among many things, the fact that it emphasized the essay and, in the words of Ted O’Neill, ‘love.’ Then I discovered I had a strange talent at taking standardized tests.

Ah, irony.

The University of Chicago (EA) (this is the my uber-dream school)- decent
University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (Early Response)- very good chance
Swarthmore College- decent
Columbia University- reach
Johns Hopkins University - decent
Northwestern University- decent
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (safety)- very good chance

Umich should be a slam dunk and Northwestern too.

Yeah, I’m a UMich legacy if that makes any difference.

[given how quickly threads are buried, shameless bump]

Also, would I have any advantage in submitting the remainder of my applications this weekend, or would it be alright for me to wait until December to submit them?

ECs are strong and show dedication but there’s no atypical activity to set you apart. I’m guessing in at all except for Yale and Harvard thanks to your strong ACT; whilst Chicago may focus on the essay, your exceptional class rank, ACT, and SATIIs will probably render the essay not as important as for some other borderline applicants. Then again, it’s all speculation, since I’m not particularly familiar with Chicago.

What do you guys think of the balance of the schools? Too many reaches? Not enough safeties?

News of the day: I just got my SAT I results back from the test I took, and I got a 2370, with 800’s on Math and CR and 770 on Writing.

Should I send these scores in, or would it be redundant given the ACT? Would they have any effect?

Just send in your ACTs they’re terrific =)
You’re in Science Olympiad AND Forensics? That really sounds impossible! I’m in forensics, and wanted to do Science Olympiad, but their competitions are always on the same days as ours =/
Here’s my opinion:
The University of Chicago (EA) (this is the my uber-dream school)- high match to low reach
University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (Early Response)- I think you’re basically in (low match)… maybe safety?
Swarthmore College- low reach
Columbia University- low reach
Johns Hopkins University - high match
Northwestern University- high match
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (safety)- safety!

could you also chance me? thanks!
