Mobile application

Hi guys,

How helpful is developing a mobile application oriented towards a social cause. How helpful is this achievement for college admissions. It will be a full fledged app that works to eradicate one social problem.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

For US top colleges, not a tip. Are you only applying in Canada?

No, I am applying to the US also. So, are you saying it is not advisable to invest the time to develop an app that reaches out in a social way?

Not really. Lots of kids noodle around with apps, and adults, too.

If you’re aiming high or for holistic colleges, these more solitary things aren’t the “it.” But if you want more help, you need to tell stats, targets, other ECs. And you need to learn more what does impress, from what the colleges say. You can be better off ensuring you have committed, hands-on service with the needy.

Alright. But a little more clarification on what I meant to say.

I just wanted to develop an application that catered with the hospitals in my local area so that people can visit them without too many problems during emergencies. My friends and I have initiated the task, but we were apprehensive whether we should invest more time or not.

By the way, I have good SAT, AP and SAT subject test scores. I more inclined towards computers and math. So, I thought this would be a good avenue for me to work on since it shows my interests as an extracurricular activity.

Do it- but don’t expect an admissions tip for it. Do it b/c you are genuinely interested and it will have a value of it’s own.

As @lookingforward noted, many students build apps, which is fine- but it doesn’t stand out. Even an app that really took off would be of limited interest to most unis, b/c it’s a one-off. On the other hand, the app can be a part of your overall narrative, showing how you have taken an interest or idea and made it tangible, and previewing what is coming next.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking. Thanks a lot @lookingforward and @collegemom3717.

By the way, could you reply to my other question on University of Waterloo’s exams.

Sorry, don’t know enough to have a helpful response on Waterloo exams!

That’s alright. Thank you…

Have you asked the hospitals if they’re interested, what their concerns are? Have you looked deeply into what existing processes are and what’s priority?

" just wanted to develop an application that catered with the hospitals in my local area so that people can visit them without too many problems during emergencies"

What does that even mean though?
