Mobile Network Coverage

This is a question lot of new students will probably have. From a user’s perspective, which service provider would you say has the best coverage in Amherst College, specifically GSM providers. I know there is info on that in the Amherst website, but a first-hand experience is more valuable.

I don't know what GSM means. I have Verizon and it works great (I think there's a tower on campus). Never had a dropped call or poor reception. There is one other provider that also has a tower on campus, but I'm not sure which one. Probably a similar experience with them as well.

Catfish, GSM providers are those that offer handsets with a removable SIM card, and you can use that card in any other handset and get service from the SIM card provider. Verizon is not a GSM provider, their connection is embedded in the handset, but most of the other providers(AT&T, T-Mobile) are GSM providers. Normally, they give you a free handset of inferior quality, that's why I want to bring a handset with me to the campus, and then just take that SIM out and put it in my preferred handset. You didn't know that?

I see. So Verizon is out for you then. I think that AT&T is the other provided with a tower on campus, but I'm not sure. If that's the case, then they would be your best bet.

don't use T-mobile. pretty bad service. do able but often doesnt work in dorms unless near a window.

I agree with andyman. I have T-mobile and, at least when I went to visit Amherst in the spring, I had to borrow my hosts' phones to make calls because I had little to no reception on much of the campus. I believe that a lot of Amherst students had Cingular, which seemed to work well for them. Can anyone confirm that? (I need an answer to this question too.)

Most of my friends seem to have Verizon, which is nice because of free in-network calling.
