anyone have any opinion on the upper-level philosophy courses? I’m interested in taking Decision Theory or maybe Metaphysics. I would take an intro level course as preparation, but have no interest whatsoever in any of the intro level classes, and they are all during hours that are incovenient or very popular for other courses.

My possible schedule, would love some feedback:

ECON0110-C01 Principles of Economics
LITR0110A-S01 Fiction I …
MCM0100-S01 Introduction to Modern Culture and Media …
SOC0020-S01 Perspectives on Social Interaction: An Introduction to Social Psychology

I’m not 100% certain about this but Decision Theory will probably involve some math-like stuff calculating utility and things like that. The textbook for the class is available so you might want to check that out:

Metaphysics seems a little more hardcore. Its pre-reqs are 3 prior courses in philosophy, so I don’t think it’s the first thing I would delve into.

My philosophy background so far is just Logic. I’ll be taking Ancient Philosophy and Decision Theory this fall, so I guess I’ll see you if you do decide to take Decision Theory.

Best advice: shop it, and see if it really interests you/you can handle the workload/difficulty. If not, try something else.

possible schedule - would love some feedback:
ENGN 0030 intro to engineering
MATH 0190
CSCI 0150
CLPS 0020 Approaches to the Mind: Introduction to Cognitive Science

is engn 0030 mandatory s/nc? i think i heard that somewhere…

also, does anyone know anything about
SOC 0020 Perspectives on Social Interaction: An Introduction to Social Psychology
or MCM 0100 introduction to Modern Culture and Media
or CLPS 0700 Social Psychology
thanks!

@HannahKailey - which language? This will probably determine the best response. I believe Spanish and French exams are offered each semester, but most other departments only offer placement exams in the fall. After intro level, the courses are no longer year long, but most departments (other than French and Spanish) would prefer to place you in 300 or 500 rather than 400, it seems.

@snowcbear: ENGN0030 is mandatory S/NC according to the Critical Review.

The language is Spanish. I thought I would probably test into 400 or 500. So I had thought those were done by semester, but I’m not sure.

I’d take the placement test right away if you have any intention of taking the course in the fall. Otherwise, it depends on if you’d prefer the placement based on how you are right out of high school (assuming you’d get up to that proficiency level again quickly) or how you are at the beginning of the course (which would probably lead to a slightly easier course).

In Spanish, even 400 (second year second semester) is offered in both the fall and spring, and the placement exams are offered at the start of each semester, so you have lots of flexibility.

Okay. Thank you so much for your advice.

Maybe I’m a tad early, but I’ve got a proto-schedule pretty much worked out for Spring 2011 -

COLT0510I-S01 25318 Virgil and Milton E Hour (M.,W.,F. 12:00-12:50 PM) at TBA - Peter K. Saval

HIAA0620-S01 25365 The Age of Rubens and Rembrandt: Visual Culture of the Netherlands in the Seventeenth Century J Hour (T.,Th. 1:00-2:20 PM) at TBA - Jeffrey M. Muller

HIST1040-S01 23469 Europe in the High Middle Ages (ca. 1000-ca. 1450) H Hour (T.,Th. 9:00-10:20 AM) at TBA - Amy G. Remensnyder

ITAL0200-S05 20517 Elementary Italian F Hour (M.,W.,F. 1:00-1:50 PM) at TBA and
I Hour (T.,Th. 10:30-11:50 AM) at TBA - TA

idk if any of you have taken these classes or had these professors, but if you have, tell me if any of these definitely aren’t worth taking

Remensnyder is a boss. Lots of reading (300 pages/week), manageable amount of writing, great lectures.

Excellent .

Celaplusaimaple: just saw this! Sounds fine, but I’ve had friends take HIST1040 and say it’s A LOT of reading and a fair amount of writing. Remensynder is supposed to be amazing, though (and very much worth the early hour). Just keep that in mind, especially since it looks as if your other courses will be reading-heavy.

I am extremely sorry to be bringing up a very old thread, but this thread was really helpful for me going into the past semester, so I thought it might help again. I was wondering if it is a really bad idea to take three mandatory pass/fail classes. I took three mandatory pass/fail classes last semester, and I worked really hard. I am just concerned because I am planning on applying to grad school (an MFA program for directing). Will it look awfully bad?

I don’t know about specific programs’ policies, but you’re unlikely to be penalized for mandatory S/NC classes.

^^^ yeah, I’ve actually thought of dropping it so I could try out a philosophy course (since I want to cover all of the subjects I’m interested in during freshman year and I already took a history class), largely due to the amount of reading

Remember that you can always get a course performace report if you’re worried about the number of mandatory S/NC classes – and if it’s mandatory, I think the prof has to fill it out, and then you can include that with your transcript.

I have to also chime in on behalf of HIST1040 – definitely shop it, because Remensnyder is really a fantastic professor (haven’t taken 1040, but took the prequel), one of my favorites at Brown. The reading is entirely worth it!

Thank you for the advice!
