DS just got back results from a Mock ACT. In science section (40 questions), he got one wrong, omitted 4. Overall percentage was a 88% and score was a 28. Based on overall percentages of other sections and corresponding scores, this seems low. Anyone know how this all works?

Omitting is never good on the ACT since there’s no guessing; penalty, for starters. If he picks one letter to bubble in for all the questions he doesn’t know, there’s a good chance he’ll get at least one of those right! That is a pretty harsh curve, but it changes for every test. Because there are so few questions in the science and reading sections, every question wrong tends to have a bigger impact than a question wrong in English/math.
