Mode of Transportation on and around Campus?

I have a nice lowrider bike that i wanted to take on campus but I heard it might be gone in a split second. So my idea is to buy a cheap but reliable bike and some expensive locks to get me around schools. I think my roommate might bring a car up there but everyone he talks to tell him no to do so.
Can any of you current and future Gators share how you get around on campus or plan to get around?

The bus system is awesome - there is both a citywide system and a campus system and they are incredibly easy to use once you figure them out (just ask someone when you are first learning and most people would be happy to help you - there are also bus schedules/routes available on some buses and at the Reitz Union information desk). The buses run every day except for Sunday, and Wednesday-Saturday at night.

There is also a service called SNAP (I think the # is 392-SNAP) and you can call them at night if you need to get from one point on campus to another - they will come pick you up.

thank you for the quick response. I heard about the bus system but i'm a person that never ride a city bus. Do you see a lot of people with bike on campus?
I also heard that UF security give people citations for no reason. Is that true?

Do you mean that UF security gives you citations for no reason for bicycles or in general?

I'm guessing you're talking about UPD - they will give you parking citations if you have a car and don't follow the permitting rules, and you can also get pulled over on a bike for pretty much anything that you can get pulled over for in a car (not signalling, not having lights at night, etc.) Just in general, they will sometimes stop you if you're walking around campus obviously drunk. Some people might consider some of these reasons pretty stupid, but it's not NO reason. Basically, if you make an attempt to follow the rules, they won't bother you.

And yes there are lots of people with bikes on campus. Just make sure you lock it up the right way and you should be fine - they usually show you how to do this at preview.

I'm taking my car (don't forget to get a parking permit at preview!), and other than that I plan to take buses.

If you live in a dorm as a freshman, a car is probably more trouble than its worth.

Parking is next to impossible during the day. It also may be difficult to find parking near your dorm even with a permit. Therefore, you will want to take public transportation, or a bike, to get around during the day. In the evenings, parking is more available, so if you live off campus, a car would be useful to get you on and off campus during late hours.

My S is bringing a car also, but knows that he won't be using it during the week. He is living in a dorm as a freshman. He wants his car so that he can do some travelling on weekends. Plus, being from Houston, he doesn't think he can live without a car! He is getting a cheapo bike to get around campus.

alisone05 and ag54, I just got this e-mail from the Dept of Transportation (and you probably did too, but I'll paste it just in case you didn't see it) so I would recommend pre-ordering your permit instead of getting it at Preview if at all possible!
