Hey guys, I'm an administrator in a semi-failing Model UN club at my school. Im really passionate about foreign relations and debate but i can't seem to acquire the necessary funds or information to allow my delegation to attend high profile conferences :( !!
My questions to you are:
How do you build good (but cheap) experience in your delegation?
How do you raise money (creatively)?! (our school refuses to fund us)
What database do you use to find good Model UN conferences in your area?!
Thanks!

How do you raise Money:

Street Corners at night.
Trust me…

I am having the same problem, crazyfrog821.

First off, is there a core group of club members who are genuinely interested, or are you the sole person trying to keep it afloat?

Some ideas my model UN club have for money:
- A time capsule that will be buried on school grounds and have an official ceremony, and people pay $5 to be able to put something in it.
- Bake sales
- Plain up asking for sponsors…

The website “BestDelegate” is a good resource for all things MUN.

In terms of money, our club has never had a fundraiser. All members pay (25-45$) in club dues which covers 2-3 conferences usually. Our club does get a substantial amount of money from the school though because the club has been so popular and successful in the past.

In terms of finding MUN conferences, “BestDelegate” has a good list of conferences, but you can also just Google MUN conferences in around your location and find them.

I would also suggest holding an in-house conference which can help serve as a good orientation for new delegates. At our school all MUN members get an excused absence from school to go to the auditorium and just debate all day. The ability to skip a couple days of school and the fact that it looks good on college apps is a good way to market the club in my opinion, especially to people who aren’t into debate/foreign affairs too much

To build skills up and experience, throw mock conferences. Trust me, they help a lot. Raising money wise, you gotta throw bake sales, events, etc.

But mock conferences and heated debates are what build skills. Something I could never get my MUN club to do because I had a cocky bunch of freshman pricks.

Hey, I’m interested in joining the MUN club at my school. Do you think it’s too late?

That’s a question you’d definitely have to ask the club advisors/ officers!

Try having a car wash. It would be easier, though, if you did this perhaps in the spring.
Bake sales are another idea.

Just try to identify what conference you wish to attend (someone mentioned BestDelegate which is a great source) and identify the costs.

Good luck!

Thanks guys! What i think I’m going to do it set up an aggressive fund raising plan and email it to all members including the following things:
6 bake sales a year, each person required to staff a minimum of 2
50 dollar club fee due at the beginning of the year, covers conference costs
We have our own conference already, I’m going to up the delegate fee from 12-15 dollars (may not seem like a lot but we get 250+ attendees a year so thats a good 750-1000 dollars more)
I am going to set up a QUALIFYING system in which you must place at one of our two regional conferences and ATTEND our school conference in order to attend the out of town conference (still deciding where that will be)
All in all, if all 50 members of the club pay the fee, plus 15 dollars for 250 attendees, plus an average of 50 dollars per successful bake sale, we have 6550 dollars that the school had promised to match, so 12000 dollars should be enough to get approx 20 people on a bus to a well respected conference for 2-5 nights, right?
Thanks for your help!!!

250+ attendees a year? That hardly sounds like failing. :O

Haha its our one big event , it garners a lot of public attention, but other than that, the club is essentially lifeless :(

Is your high school in New York, or the tri-state area?

no, its in the mid-atlantic

Ah. Guess my school’s model UN can’t come. :)

Haha sorry we’d love to have you if you’re willing to hop a bus down to DC :D

where in the Mid-atlantic specifically? better yet, name of the conference?

We’re in DC, ill get the name of the conference for you if you want, i just have to ask the administrator of the event, ill get right back.

Are you still a MIT hopeful? :)
