What is Model United Nations? How much does it help your resume? Is it easy/how much time does it consume? What awards can be won? What's it like?

It’s essentially debate centered around international relations. Don’t do it because you want to improve your resume; do it because you like international relations and/or debating. It’s easy if you’re good at debate and/or interested in the topics for Model UN. Essentially, with regards to General Assembly, which is the more formal assembly, you debate on an issue of international concern, trying to solve it by passing a resolution. However, you must do this from the perspective of a nation you’re assigned. So for example, if your nation is the Philippines, you must debate nuclear proliferation from the point of view of the Philippines. The issue depends on what committee you are in, as the topic changes on whether you’re in UNESCO, WHO, ECOFINN, or basically any of the supranational organizations. However, you need to explain and debate why your resolution should be passed, since you’ll need people to agree with your resolution. Then, the resolutions will be voted on, and the one that gets the majority will be passed. There’s a lot of rules and things about the process I didn’t go over but this is the gist of it.

However, it’s also a lot of fun if you do Crisis Committee. To me, Crisis Committee is basically formal Dungeons and Dragons disguised with an International Relations twist. I think it’s harder to understand if you haven’t been in one. I’m not sure if this is universal, but in the Crisis committees I’ve been to, you can be as creative as you want. The topics vary and can be incredibly random. For example, the last conference I went to had a committee on how to solve a zombie apocalypse, ending in the nuclear destruction of the moon.

In terms of awards, your chairs, who are basically the moderators for you committee, determine who gets an award. They see who participates, who has demonstrated the most leadership and has argued and debated well, and gives awards to whomever they feel deserves one. There’s usually Honorable Mention, Outstanding Delegate, and Best Delegate in terms of awards.

Try Model UN out, but don’t stay in it just because it might look good for college. Do it because it’s a hell of a lot of fun (to me, at least).

Not very easy to explain. Google it!
