Model United Nations - What exactly is this club about?

I know you have to like... present speeches about countries... but I'm very confused.

I'm really into European history, the the Renaissance and ancient Greek and Roman history, but I'm not a huge fan of politics.

What is MUN briefly about?

it’s VERY political. basically, each person is assigned a country. at each Model UN meeting you discuss an issue. as your country, you have to present your point of view and fight for resolutions your country would agree with.

for example, if the issue was Palestinian liberation, if you represented the US or Israel, you’ld vote against it. If you represented Jordan or Yemen, you’ld vote for it.

It’s pretty much about ‘debating’ current events from the perspective of your designated nation. So like, the topic is on Piracy on the Somali coast. And you’re Bulgaria. How does Bulgaria feel about the topic and what should be done?

You all volunteer to present each country’s position from the Speaker’s List and eventually create a resolution. The assembly votes on the resolution, and if it’s passed, you’re done.

Depending on the MUN conference, it can be extremely detailed and there can be different specializations for various topics (health, legal, econ, environments) or it can be simple where everyone is a part of the same assembly.

During the conferences you can pass notes around to other nations asking for alliances, or questions about their position, or asking them to sign your resolution. But a lot of people use the note passing system to flirt with people. LOL. [;

The 2 posters above have it correct.

Oh, and theres always some idiot declaring war on someone else. Even though you can’t do that…

Thanks, everyone. I’m not sure if I’ll have time for this club, but it’s having it’s first year at my school this year. I’m really not sure whether to join or not. It seems like a huge time commitment and I don’t know if I’ll really like it.

I did debate during freshmen year and hated it because of the time commitment. I also hate wearing suits lol.

@pixels

And there’s usually the idiot from DPRK bashing the U.S. and democracy

@op

It’s fun, you get to meet a lot of new people. And if it’s an overnight conference, there’s usually a dance. [;

haha. I went to the Johns Hopkins University Model United Nations Conference last year

@BlueDevil18 - I definitely agree with freshflip13: its probably one of my favorite clubs. Its really fun, you meet cool people, and yeah, its just a great time.

@freshflip13 - Haha stereotypical MUN idiot right there. I could name so many things that are overused in MUN. Ex: the one person that has nothing to say other than “You can’t invade our sovereignty”! lol

this is totally off-topic but dear god I wish we had a model UN club.

my school used to apparently, but they stopped it the year I became a freshman because we do IES (think model UN, but economics only) instead, but I wish we could have both

/sobs

@Elleya - Why don’t you try starting one? I’m sure if you got a sizable group of kids that wanted to do it they’d let you.
