Looking for a 1-3 week dance program with an emphasis on Modern/Jazz/Contemporary. Preferably in NYC, Seattle or SF. Can't be extremely competitive and must accept an audition video in lieu of live. Girl age 16 many years of dance.

A friend has done Joffrey Jazz and Contemporary in NYC and liked it. I’m not sure about the audition process, though. And I have no idea about West coast, sorry.

Hi I will be doing Joffrey’s Jazz and Contemporary program in 2 weeks in NYC and would be able to tell you more about it once I finished. I’m only doing 1 week, but they also have 2 week and 3 week intensives. I’m very excited. The audition wasn’t that bad, I enjoyed it because it was more like a dance class with a warm up and then a combination that we learned then did in groups. They had tons of auditions in various cities and I also do believe you can submit a video audition, but I would suggest looking at the website for more information.

Also the Cornish School of the Arts in Seattle have some summer dance programs/classes/intensives, I’m east coast so I don’t have much information about it, but I would suggest looking at the website for more information.

Bates Dance festival, and American Dance Festival, are well-known summer programs for modern, with programs specifically for that age group. Ailey School in NYC, but might be too competitive.

ps Subscribe or get a copy of Dance Magazine’s summer program issue.

The Alonzo King programs in San Fran look interesting. Want to scope out college programs that allow less emphasis on ballet and more on modern or contemporary.

What about taking classes at either Broadway Dance Centre or Steps in NYC? The classes are terrific- you can take as many as you want and in so many genres. It might be more flexible than an intensive.

Lines is an excellent program. It is very ballet focused, although not classical. Admission is highly competitive, although this is no reason not to apply. I mention it because in your initial post you mentioned you were looking for something that wasn’t. San Francisco also has San Francisco Conservatory of Dance’s summer program, which is contemporary/modern focused. They accept video auditions. In NY you could look at Complexions summer program–I believe they also offer something in Detroit. The Martha Graham School also has a summer program, no sure what the process is for applying to that. Of course Alvin Ailey has a program. It is 6 weeks, but I think you can go for less. Again, selective. Ailey also has a college program through Fordham University that is more contemporary although still rooted in ballet.
