Modern Language Requirement

My daughter has an interest in both the Naval and Air Force Academy. She, as a freshman, is taking Latin 1 Honors as the only other choices at her school were Spanish and American Sign language. The kids in Latin tend to be the smarter kids and many belong to the Junior Classical League where they compete at the regional and state ( possibly national) level in the language. This club affords leadership opportunities as well as state and potential national level recognition. We noticed on the USAF Academy web site the requirement for 2 years of a modern foreign language. My daughter had intended to stay in Latin all 4 years as we were told by her counselor that 4 consistent years of a foreign language was preferable. The high school has just added French ( with a definite committed teacher) and Chinese ( no guarantee for all 4 levels of Chinese).

Should daughter continue on her current intended Latin path and try to pick up the other 2 years of the “modern foreign” from online FLVS or during the summer at the local state college?

You should talk to your districts Air Liason Officer(Air Force) and Blue and Gold Officer(Navy), my school is a prestigous school as well that often sends students in the Latin and Greek courses to the national and state level. But most likely, I think they will tell you to take a modern language course like Spanish or Chinese. But who knows, maybe a language immersion program over the summer might qualify as well, or a summer course at a community college. Anyways, its good that she is preparing now for the academies, as they are very selective. Good luck.
