As a prospective music major, what colleges offer the most "modern" programs. By modern, I mean study of modern classical composers (Cage, Stockhausen, Nono) or study of modern jazz artists (Coleman, Taylor).

Can you be more specific? Are you planning on studying mainly theory/composition, or performance? And if so, what instrument? Do you want a conservatory environment where it's 90% music, or are you looking for a music college within a larger university setting with some liberal arts requirements? It would help if you could tell us more what your goals are....

I am most definitely focused on theory/composition, as of now I lean towards theory (hence my name). However, I still am indecisive on university vs. conservatory vs. liberal arts college. I was just wondering if any schools immediately popped into anyone's mind...

Oberlin, Manhattan, NEC "pop into" my mind, for starters.

It seems that many LAC's focus on world music a lot these days, which is different from what you are seeking.

Others will have many ideas about other schools. Good luck...

IU Jacobs has a very respected contemporary composition department with supporting ensembles and very rigorous theory. My older son studied composition there. He did his bachelor's in recording arts with a minor in composition and I know that he recorded a lot of original music while there for various students and faculty including Freund, Sandstrom, etc.
