Modes of transportation

We live in a very dense suburban area. I can (and do) walk or bike to many things, but we are still very car-dependent. Public transit options for commuting into NYC are convenient and widely available, but for getting to and from point A or B locally, they are limited and inconvenient.

We have a trolley stop within walking distance of our home that we can take to many areas of San Diego. The trolley does not go to where H and I both work, but we only go in the office 1 or 2 days a week. Since we work very near to each other we carpool to work. We still have 2 cars, but when my Acura RDX needs to be replaced we are looking at electric cars to buy.

There was a time when we had 4 drivers and 3 cars (plus a pop-up tent camper). Laughed a bit today looking at Allstate insurance card printout today, with only two slots filled… and maybe someday only one(?). Back then my husband and I worked at the same corporate location (different companies/buildings on same big site). Decided it was easier to commute together than to make make the high school driver and the college commuter student share a car.

Our neighborhood is surrounded by woods/river and 2 highways. There is no public transportation available, and you really can’t walk from here to anywhere. We felt like we kind of had to provide cars for our kids, because they had no other options. I worked in Washington DC for many years, and took the subway. For a short period of time I lived in a place the bus was actually more convenient (but that was in the 80s, before some of the metro was completed).

We are almost down to one car. The 23 year old truck is used exclusively for things trucks do: trips to HD, topsoil yard, and the dump. The electric horseless carriage is used for everything else. It helps that we can carpool to work!

We walk a fair amount. Every once in awhile I will get out the old bike and dust it off. We are very close to a paved greenway that makes it easy to walk (or ride the dusty bike) to lots of places. I do drive to the grocery store and the library. H walks almost everywhere, but if he’s going farther afield he will drive. He walked to the Farmer’s Market the other day and stopped by the grocery store (about 4 miles round trip). He also walked to the dentist today. We both WFH so there are many days we don’t drive at all.

Great free bus system in our town, too. I occasionally use it and my kids occasionally use it, but I get impatient waiting for it and don’t like breathing everybody else’s breath so most times I’d just rather walk if I don’t have the car.

We will Uber occasionally like to the airport or something, but not very often. We use it more when we are traveling.

It’s great you are able to walk so much!
