Modest grades + Tough Schools

Sup. I applied regular and have already gotten into the Naval Academy (My absolute first choice). I was just wondering what my chances are for Harvard, Georgetown, George Washington, Boston College and UPenn though. I Please be honest though cause my scores are pretty modest and if I had a chance at some of the harder schools I think it would be my hispanic background and ECs.

Essay - wrote about my experience in politics including volunteering for Rudy Guiliani at the RNC in NYC, the California Recall, and two senate campaigns in California in which I did a lot of traveling up and down California. English teacher said was the best she had seen in 5 years. It was very passionate.
Recs - all execellent (Just guessing)

I'm hoping to strike some kinda vibe with the readers with my common app essay and being hispanic may help also. Thanks guys. I know you get a lot of these!!!

I'm Hispanic and from So Cal, as well.

I can't believe you're a Republican, and that you go to a private school. Are you rich or something? Did your parents go to college?

You're SAT is fine since you're Hispanic (unless your family is rich), you're SAT II, however, is not. Did you take it in January? I hope you did, and that you did better.

Like I said, I can't believe you're a Republican. This will probably work strongly IN your favor since colleges are predominantly Democratic, and just the fact that you're into a Republican Hispanic who cares about politics means a LOT.

Personally, I was involved in politcs, but not the same extent as you. (I'm a purple Democrat.)

You still have a chance, don't worry. I know of an African-American girl from the L.A. area who got into Harvard with a 1270, so anything is possible.

Good luck to both of us!

Send me a Private Message if you wish to discuss each other's stats or whatever.

1 in CS, and 2 3s? That sticks out pretty bad in ur app. boost ur APs...ul be better then.

While that does look bad, don't let it get you down.

APs count, but not that much. I know of someone that had 15 tests---all 5s, and he was rejected. While on the other hand, people with no APs (or Honors classes) get in all the time. (privided they're a URM, which you are.)

I agree, but that person with 15 APs could be rejected, while someone else without a big "hook" would get in with little or no APs because their school didn't offer them.

I think the fact that you are Hispanic could work in your favor. You're SAT I scores are pretty good. What I like about them is that there is a relatively even breakdown between the math and verbal.

Your SAT II scores need to go up. I don't think the colleges will put much emphasis on the U.S. History, but they will definitely want to see a high writing score. I'm guessing that APs don't count as much because my siblings both got 2's on their AP exams, but they were able to get into some really prestigious colleges. Most people don't take AP Computer Science anyway. Hopefully, they'll just consider the fact that you've at least taken AP courses instead of focusing on the score itself.

haha im hispanic and i am the young republicans president at my school, similar grades and sats too. represent the hispanic republicans out there!!

Congratulations on your refreshing political beliefs. I am rooting for you at those schools because you are a republican. However, I think you would have less of a chance if your school publicizes its class rank. Close to 100% of students at the most selective schools on your list are ranked in the top quarter of their high school classes.

Wow! Thanks for all the positive input about my political standing. I didn't think there were much of us out there! Anyway... I knew my hispanic and political experience would help but what schools specfically do you guys think I have a chance at?

It's really hard to say, because you have so much going for you, yet a few key factors working against you. I'd say, though, with a strong essay and strong recs, a solid GPA, and a decent SAT score, your oustanding ECs, and your nationality, it'll be a game of chances. DEFINITELY apply to some of the more presitigous colleges, but also apply to an array of safetys that you wouldn't mind attending.
