Molecular Biology / Biochemistry / Biophysics

Hello all,

I have career interests in the following areas, researching infectious diseases, epidemiology, and gene therapy. I will most likely attend graduate school to acquire a doctorate in virology.

I am searching for colleges/universities that have one of the majors above AND have high containment laboratory systems. I plan to conduct infectious disease research while in college.

For my current research project, I am genetically engineering Adeno-Associated Viral Vectors for treatment of Chondrosarcoma (cartillage cancer). I am limited to using vectors, and cannot package live virus due to lack of access of safety equipment.

I want to attend a college/university where I can conduct research with live virus, preferably BSL 3.

Here are some of my basic stats:

GPA: 5.29/6 Weighted

SATs: 1290

APs: Bio, Chem, Statistics

ECs: Tons of unusual and strong activities.

Thank You!

Most R1 universities with microbiology programs will have labs doing BSL-3 research, however I am unsure whether or not undergrads are allowed to work in those areas, especially early on in their undergraduate career.

My daughter went to Northeastern University (Boston) and worked in microbiology research on co-op, and during school. She’s now in a PhD program in a related field.
