I am hopefully going to be an undergrad student next fall (2016). I have an audition for Molloy/Cap21, and it is actually my first and I am just really curious if it is selective or not, I have heard mixed things. I really want to attend school there and really could use some insight. I know molloys acceptance is about 72 percent and I will be fine there but it is the musical theatre program I am worried about! Please help!
@eastchesterMom has a child there…try messaging her
@bisouu thank you!!
Molloy/CAP21 is a fine program. In terms of competitiveness, one advantage is that while CAP21 itself has been around a long time and has an excellent reputation, the partnership with Molloy is very new - it just started last year. So while it’s garnering a lot of interest, it’s still new enough that many people may not know about it yet. I think it’s still early enough that it may not yet have developed the HUGE, overwhelming number of applicants from all across the country that the older, more established programs have. So that might work in your favor! Break a leg!
Agh! Thank you so much! That has already brought down my nervous level!! Thanks so much!
Anyone else?
Huge overwhelming number of applicants? They wanted a cohort of 24 or so for the Class of 2019, but wound up with much more…more accepted applicants committed than were expected. (Not to worry; they broke the group into two cohorts). We have ARRIVED, and in record time. The fabulous Ricky Oliver (roliver@cap21.org) – and maybe a little bit of me, too – got the word out and put this unique program on the map, fast. BAL, @BWAYWANNABE! I know you will find that the CAP 21 auditors are kind and encouraging, unlike some schools I won’t name whose audition experience is more like a cattle call.
@EastchesterMom thanks so much again! I’m so hopeful for this school! If you or your student have any audition tips or facts about the audition I wouldn’t be mad if you told me them
@Eastchestermom, thrilled to hear that “the word is out” on Molloy/CAP21 and it’s getting the attention it richly deserves! (And yes, they should put you on the payroll of their PR department, LOL! Your posts about it are always so informative and helpful and enthusiastic! I always love reading them.)
Thanks, @actorparent! I like it when my posts get Ricky Oliver’s attention, and he chimes in…he knows far better than I do what’s going on with the Class of 2020. @BWAYWANNABE – unless they have changed it from 2 years ago, there is no dance call…believe me, CAP21 will teach you to dance their way once you get in. Follow the audition requirements to the letter, get a good night’s sleep, and have fun with it. They told my D they wanted to see and hear her heart and soul in the material.
I agree with the above advice, especially the have fun part. Also, be kind (as you always should be) and enthusiastic (if that is genuinely you). From my D’s descriptions, Ricky was super enthusiastic, friendly, and encouraging in the audition, and he continued to be that as well as responsive throughout the next phase of this process (even kindly and warmly emailing D the night of her audition, accepting her into CAP21.)
They accept that quick? That’s super exciting. I have already been in contact with Ricky and he has been utterly amazing, he is so on top of what he is doing and that in itself makes me love the school. Did your “D’s” all audition on campus? If so was it just Ricky? I’ve heard it was just him at Unifieds. Wasn’t sure if it was the same for NYC
My D auditioned for Ricky at Chcago Unifieds. It was just him.
They didn’t accept all within that short timeframe (so don’t be discouraged if that doesn’t happen), but I believe it was generally within a few weeks, which is still fast!
OK, @BWAYWANNABE – how did your audition go?
I am wondering about costs of this program…I know there is the Molloy tuition and then the additional CAP 21 cost, which is like $6000 maybe? I know Molloy is a public school right, so not a lot of aid going to out of state applicants…wondering if we should keep it on our list of bag it for cost reasons…anyone chime in on any aid info?
@theaterwork – Molloy is NOT a public school, it is private! My experience is that Molloy is generous with financial aid. D got a huge academic scholarship, which made Molloy/CAP 21 very affordable. I paid through the nose for my older child (not MT) to attend NYU, so I know what I’m talking about…it was nearly $70K per year by the time she graduated in 2014 Yes, there is an additional cost of $6,000 for the CAP 21 training, which I consider a bargain given the caliber of the training. I think you will find that most of these programs are around the same in terms of cost. The financial aid offered makes the difference. I would never advise anyone to not apply to a program because of the stated costs…you compare your financial aid offers after acceptance, not before application.
@EastchesterMom My audition is in NYC in about two weeks! I am so ready!!!
BAL, BAL @BWAYWANNABE! My D says you have to say it twice.
Thanks for the info @EastchesterMom my bad in thinking it was public. I’m getting so confused with schools! My D is very interested in this program and I like that she wouldn’t be living in NYC. Lol good to hear about the aid too. We shall keep it on the list for the criteria of NYC school even if it’s not entirely! Our friend went to the summer Cap 21 high school intensive and loved it
Time to start your chart, @theaterwork – each school’s deadlines, audition requirements, contact info etc…if you don’t, you’ll go crazy, and this process is crazy enough.
