I think money is a hook just like a lot of things are hooks. More than a few hollywood and sports celebs are able to get their kids into the schools they want and it had to be more than just the the kids are qualified. A LOT of kids are qualified, but that doesn’t mean they’ll get into NYU acting or dance without that extra letter from a famous person or a summer internship that mom was able to arrange.
Being the offspring of a famous person is likely a hook too.
@momofthreeboys (In the spirit of discussion) But those admissions details DO follow people. For example, Jared Kushner.
As Woogzmama said, it will be interesting to follow this case if it goes to court and details of the sausage-making in development admissions are revealed. I know a family in which one son, a not-stellar academic, spent a summer of high school in rehab. The parents used their connections and a heavy donation to get him into a university he would never have gotten into otherwise. I’m sure that kind of thing happens more often than we know. It would also be interesting to know the outcomes for those students. After all, we discuss the outcomes for athletes and other groups given special consideration.
The “outcome” is that they have rich and well-connected parents and don’t need to worry about finding jobs by competing for them.
As I recall, George W. Bush was quite proud of his C average at Yale, which quite likely meant a “gentlemen’s C”. (From the commencement speech he later gave, “And as I like to tell the C students: You too, can be president.”)
Precisely! From the cases we know, many of these development students went on to mixed career success. They also took spots from students who might have cast their alma mater in a better light had they been given the chance instead.
“Might have” are the operative words. I think it would be incredibly difficult to take a group of high school seniors, even bright ones that theoretically could attend an elite college, and predict who will be in a career that brings fame and fortune and who will just be an average citizen-wealthy or not.
@Publisher funny, the few students I know who did the Penn summer thing were admitted to Penn. THAT SAID, they were all very bright kids. I don’t think doing s.t.e.m. work in Philly during the summer is a slacker pursuit.
Slacker pursuit ? I don’t understand your post @writermom2018.
I think you have to keep in mind that the presence of the offspring of the rich and famous is an asset that lends prestige to the Ivies and other top-level elite private colleges. How many CC posters do we see who justify the choice of an expensive Ivy over their flagship state U based on the “networking” and “connections” they believe the Ivy will offer?
Trump. Anyway, I could have gotten into just as prestigious school for half that amount. I am in the wrong business. Lol. Maybe it’s not too late.
@Publisher meaning the kids drawn to taking summer courses in Philly (usually s.t.e.m. programs) are really strong students, in my experience. They were all very strong applicants. If anything, the summer and ED just bolstered their love of the university.
As a college consultant and IECA member, I’ve yet to discuss this article with my colleagues. Should make for a lively discussion…
Lets not bring up jfk jr. good guy, good student and no proof unlike kushner. My friend was in school with him.
Um… Jackie wrote JFK jr’s college application. It’s been linked here previously (a photo of the application).
@jym626 ok lets not talk about people who died tragically and cant defend themselves.
@klbmom18 - What does that have to do with development admits? Being a development admit is not necessarily something to defend. These letters to JFK jr’s professors by Jackie are an interesting read http://www.harpersbazaar.com/celebrity/latest/a12809855/jfk-jr-jackie-kennedy-letters-for-sale/

Additionally. for the sake of accuracy (which is apparently not a word in the vocabulary of the original author of this journalistically slipshod piece), Jackie did not write JFK Jr’s college application. She completed a freshman questionnaire after he was already admitted because he was traveling. Please see pdf in the link:
https://pagesix.com/2017/10/09/jackie-worked-hard-to-keep-jfk-jr-from-flunking-college-classes/?_ga=2.209348625.248759708.1518443496-1281358911.1518443496
The application itself is clearly not in Jackie’s handwriting.
Point taken- it was an addendum to his application. His application was an entertaining read.
Agree with your previous comment that posters should not tell other posters what they can or cannot write about. If a poster thinks a post is inappropriate for whatever reason, they should report it.
So back to topic, if this article is to be believed,
And this argument by the Ivy Coach…
is a big… so what? Does that entitle Taylor to bilk them out of that kind of $?
