wow, 15--that's rough.

Penn keeps showing up, and i'm applying there, but it's weird b/c technically its IB program only accepts 40 students a year (Huntsman). does a small program make a good program, or is it just good b/c it's penn?

Obviously small doesn't mean good. Penn is good at almost everything it does, especially all aspects of business.

MK--did you go to penn?

No, but it is the best undergrad business school in the world.

The Huntsman program is a small joint degree program in which you specialize in a foreign language, and must study abroad. The target for the program is 45 people. If you study at Penn (or, more specifically, Wharton) you can still very easily do international business. Many of the Huntsmanites go into finance/consulting and more or less use the joint degree program as a credential, and many Whartonites go into more international areas. You don't need one to do the other. The Huntsman program is mainly nice if it aligns with your interests and accents classes that you'd want to take anyway. If you want to do international business, it's definitely not the only way to do that at Penn.

It's also a difficult program to get into, on top of Wharton's already difficult admissions.

So yeah, the Huntsman program is special, but you can do the same stuff in Wharton itself, you just might not have the fancy label. And, as far as the size of the program, it's just a small joint degree program within the school as a whole. They have a couple of special classes but on the whole they are just double majors with special requirements, and they socialize alot (and take themselves pretty seriously).

thx, JCoveney.

what about internat'l relations majors in arts & sciences?

My friend is an IR major. I mean...it's radically different from a business degree. It's a mix of poly sci and history with a regional focus mixed in and a couple of econ requirements. I think it's interesting stuff but I don't know much more about it.

Based on JCov's comment, he's mostly correct -although I detect a sense of jealousy, but that's normal :) - however just to clarify a few things:

The Huntsman program offers a major in International Studies that you cannot get at Penn if you are not in the program. If you are in (1) SAS or (2) Wharton and doing a SAS minor or (3) doing a dual degree, you have to choose IR, PoliSci, PPE, or something else. International Studies is a bit different than normal IR, and while of course you can take the same courses if you're in Wharton, the advantage of being in the Huntsman program is similar to being in M&T: there are certain classes than only Huntsman students take together, such as the course HIST 107. Also, the number of requirements is lessened from being in the program, so if you were to dual degree in IR and Wharton, then you would have a harder time getting everything together.

Huntsman is not simply a double major...although I must say many students who do the program do a double major in SAS with their language and international studies. You do have to complete the requirements of both SAS and Wharton, so you have those obligations as well.

And finally, in terms of socialization, one of the best parts of Huntsman is its people. The freshmen get to live together in KC3 (or, as M&T would say, they are forced to live together), but in reality, living together creates a strong community of people that support each other throughout all their years at Penn. And it's pretty cool to visit everybody when they're abroad, too.

In general, Huntsman a good program not only because of its selectivity, but also because it offers two different ways of thinking about problems...on one hand you get business analysis, and then from international studies you are exposed to another schema - whether it be through sociology, theoretical economics, or polisci - to which you may apply your specialized knowledge of the region of your target language. It's a little more tailored than the dual degree, but you come out of it knowing in-depth one region/culture/language. So I'd say go for it, but only if you're interested in a studying one region. If you want a more holistic approach, go for straight Wharton and do global analysis as your concentration.

Best of luck.

wow! thank you, clignotant! i hope to get in, but based on the probability of making it, i'm trying not to get my hopes up too high. it sounds exactly like what i want to study, though.

One of the best parts of Huntsman is it's people? Oh clig, maybe I thought that before SOMEONE blew me off FOR THE GYM, huh?!?!?!
