Most of my high school career I've been relying primarily on standardized test scores to get me to college and hopefully pay most of the way. While I maintain a somewhat decent GPA, my laziness really shows in where I place in my class (Top 13-14%). I'm planning on attending a public college in Texas (Either UT or A&M), and I'm wondering roughly how much scholarship money a high SAT score (~2350-2400), combined with a decent GPA and EC's could secure me at one of those schools. Thanks in advance.

Also, do schools typically offer scholarship money outside of their official scholarship programs if they really want a student?

does Texas still have that top 10% rule for admissions?

Often schools look at both ACT or SAT AND GPA…so if your GPA is lacking you might not qualify. UT recently eliminated its NM scholarship to focus less on merit and more on need, so I don’t know if that means they’ve eliminated or lessened other merit opportunities.

Texas A&M still has some merit $$ available thru its honors program.

You really need to visit the scholarship areas on those college websites for details. Since we don’t know your exact stats (GPA, SAT scores, etc), we really can’t give you specific info.

What are your stats?

Are you looking for a “full-ride” (tuition, room, board, books, fees, etc)? I don’t know how easy that would be to get at either school without demonstrated financial aid.

dunno about Texas, but many colleges give automatic scholarships to NMSF’s.

I don’t know my exact GPA on a 4.0 scale. Something around 3.5, I believe. I don’t take the SAT until this Saturday, but my practice tests have been coming out around 2330-2370. I do tennis, debate, computer science club, NHS, and a few other things.

I’m looking for full tuition, which would be mostly covered with the NM scholarships at A&M, but I missed the cut-off for semi-finalists by a point. The honors program scholarships would definitely help, but I wasn’t sure if I could expect any offers independent of the ones made explicit by the universities.

Are you a senior? If you’re a senior, and you haven’t taken the SAT yet, you should also sign up for the November test now, in case you don’t do as well on the Oct test. You should also try to take the ACT this month, even if it means paying a late fee.

Many kids score much higher on practice tests than they do on actual tests, so that’s why I recommend signing up for those other tests. If you wait until after you get your Oct SAT scores back, it will be too late.

And, some colleges won’t accept Nov ACT scores for scholarship consideration for senior year. Some will only take SAT Nove scores and Oct ACT scores.

Texas A&M merit $$

UT - Austin (not much info here - and it’s hard to tell if the FAFSA is req’d. If FAFSA is required, then there will likely be a “need” element required.

BTW…I think you will be hurt for admissions at UT and TX a&m because you’re not in the top 10% of your graduating class, therefore you may not get admitted to either.
