How much money do you send to your kids? I know that everything is pretty much taken care of except for the fee's as per KP's website. Do you need to send money for uniform cleaning-food outside of the chow hall-weekend fun etc..? What type of budget can one expect-if someone does not mind sharing? It is personal, so if you would like to PM me that would be great... Maybe some of the Mids might want to jump in(love ya mom-send doe pls)!

Send as much as you can possibly afford :)

In all seriousness I would definately help your son/daughter out. There are some weekend jobs that are available to the mids (if they have liberty/pass) that can help out. When I was there valet parking and catering were popular. Local yardwork and housework was also pretty common. Just remember that when the mids go out they are going out in New York City where everythaing is more expensive. For those over 21 (cough, cough) a night out at a bar can easily be over 100 including transportation, cover charge, and a couple drinks. Cover charges at some of the dance clubs run as high as 20 a person. There are definately cheaper alternatives though (museums, etc).

For the day to day stuff it's nice to have some extra cash to hit up the soda machines or ship's store. Your mid will also need some money to buy things like pens and paper.

My parents sent me $100 a month for the four years I was there (except for the times I was at sea), but I thought that was little on the low side, so i worked pretty often to supplement that.

Wow! I didn't realize that Mids were allowed to moonlight. This really adds to budgeting time all the more. It's to bad that MMA doesn't get the same stipends for KP Mids as the other 4 Academies. I know that many families are maxed out with finances and can only do so much. I know that the sea yr helps but I don't think enough!

I took you up on your private message offer Cga. It would be fantastic if they got that stipend. But they do get about 800 bucks a month while at sea during that second year so it evens out to the stipend amount from what i've been told. They say USNA Plebes get about 100 bucks a month by the time all their fees are taken out. I could be wrong there but I heard that from a USNA Mom. The moonlighting isn't too regular. I would just count it as some pocket change they can play with & not try to figure it into a budget per say. Unless my kid isn't looking for it to often! LOL

we don't recieve stipends becuase we are in the naval reserve, not the active duty navy. also, dont expect to get too many jobs. for one, you wont be able to work until after acceptance day and most of the better jobs get taken by the upperclassmen

Not too many opportunities to spend money, but as a point of information, if you take the train to NYC, buy a hamburger, etc. and movie, it will run about $50 all told. On the other hand, if you wear your uniform, folks will buy you drinks and other goodies sometimes. Great Neck is an expensive NY suburb where you are likely to go on a Sat. afternoon. Pizza and chinese carryout are popular. But summer job money should cover most expenses (you HAVE been saving your summer earnings, haven't you?) In the scheme of things, USMMA is cheap compared to even community colleges.

how much do the uniforms come in handy? i've heard some stories but don't know the full extent of it all.

you'll find out how nice the uniforms are when you get here... some details you may not want the parents to hear.

From personal experiance though, if you are on the wrestling team or the basketall team you will be here over winter break... and there is a good chance you will go to Times Square for New Years... and there is nothing better than Times Square during New Years in a uniform.

lol....using the uniform wisely...
