money from syracuse

Am i likely to get any money from syracuse with a 1220/1600 SAT, around a 89 weighted GPA, tough courseload, good leadership EC, and awesome interview already? I will def not get any need based scholarship. So is any merit available for sum1 like me

What is a 1220/1600 SAt?

syracuse said they will only be looking at the math and verbal part of the SAT so i got a 550 v 670 m.

I would like to know that too since my daughter's stats were similar, although she did a bit better on verbal and did well on writing section.

Have either of you called and asked? grmom from the thread below says that although sticker was more than any other school, it came out to be the least costly of her child's choices.

When I called a couple of schools they were direct and I knew that my S was out of the running for merit aid there, and at the other one he has a shot at some nice merit aid (depends on "the committee", but his stats are in the ballpark).

I am hoping for the basic 6,000 dollar one

My s got 1280 total on SATs - 600 V, 680 M. He got the 8,000 scholarhip, plus a good amount of grant money. The whole package with basic student loan (2,600 or something) and work study was over 24,000. This compared with similar scholarship money from other schools but little or no grant money. Very good deal, I thought.

grmom, Since your son is in Musical Theatre, did he receive the scholarships/grants based on a special talent, or were they merit/need based. Just trying to get a realistic idea.

By the way that does sound like a wonderful fa package!

just wondering, your son got about 25, 000 or more. and syracuse is about 42, 000. how did u pay for the rest of it? outside scholarships?

The scholarship is academic - all students can receive 6,000 plus based on academics. The grant money they don't really spell out - just tell you what you are receiving. I'm guessing that's basically need-based, but I don't know if they offer more or less based on other factors.
As far as how we are paying rest of tuition, which is actually 38,000 plus, not 42,000, alas, we have our own loans, etc. for that (my s did get some scholarship money from his high school, not a ton, but every little bit helps!) Still and all, unless you are going to a state school, where you will still probably pay 10,000, at least, paying 15,000 is not bad. Because of the specialized field my s is in, he had a narrow choice of schools and the best deal came from the most expensive one (Syracuse).

grmom, Thank you so much for responding. It gives us an idea about what is going on financially. Your package from them sounded very good. I hope that he is enjoying his first semester!

I did go on their website to look at the merit $ and they do seem to keep it open, since they do not state the criteria for it. You probably stated it before, I don't recall, but what does he have to do for it to be renewable for 4 years (ie: what gpa does he need to keep it)?

syracuse is a 2.0 to kept the scholarship usually

eric thanks. I meant keep it open, meaning not clearly making a cut off or giving parameters for the initial amount offered.

He needs to maintain a GPA of 2.5 - says freshman have 3 semesters to achieve that GPA before scholarship would be cut off. Grant money is renewable as long as you continue to show need for it (i.e., if you win the lottery, that would be cut off, ha, ha!). Hoping they don't get too exacting about it, since most people do make more each year, especially if they're trying to pay for the remaining amount, and the tuition will increase each year, without a doubt.

I would like to know how likely I am to receive merit money/scholarships from Syracuse (I'd love to attend the school, but without money, I don't think I could). I'm posting my stats below ... I sort of assumed I could get in, but I'd like your feed back on that. I want to study print journalism and maybe advertising.

ACT:
-Overall 31 (35 English, 34 Reading, 29 Math, 26 Science)

APs:
-Spanish (4), American Gov't (4), Comparative Gov't (4)
-This year I'm taking AP English (will take both English tests then), AP Psychology, and AP US History.

Class rank: 63/899 (weighted)
GPA: 3.75 (unweighted)/4.66 (weighted)

Extracurriculars:
Youth group (frosh)
JV swim team (frosh--had to quit for health reasons)
Student council (frosh, soph)
Peaceable Schools Initiative (frosh, soph)
Literary magazine prose reader (frosh, soph, jr., sr.)
Guitar lessons (frosh, soph, jr.)
Lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons (frosh, soph, jr., sr.)
Nat'l Spanish Honors Society (soph, jr., sr.)
Nat'l Honors Society (jr., sr.)
My town's youth commission (jr., sr.)

The extracurricular I'm most passionate about is the school newspaper, which you cannot join 'til junior year. It has received awards at the state and national level. Last year I was the copy editor (great for a junior), and this year I'm the news editor. To say it takes up a great deal of time is an understatement. I'm just afraid colleges won't realize how much time it did consume (I am there until 11 on school nights several times a month).

Oh and I went to Mexico for two weeks this past school year. I studied at a school there and lived with a family. But I don't plan on writing my personal statement about that, as it's seen as somewhat cliche.

prob get 8 or more..... i was hoping for the 8 with much lower stats

I agree, you would probably get at least 8,000 in scholarship money. Don't forget, you would more than likely also get a good amount of grant money, if you fill out the FASFA and are not rich.

Hopefully my family will get some money--my dad's salary is about 80k a year, but my mom doesn't work and I have two younger siblings ages 15 and 10

Weez & OP

Just thought I'd post some feedback on what to expect from Syracuse. My D had 1380 (old SAT) and was top 5% in her graduating class with nice ECs, great recs etc. She received Chancellor's Scholarship of $8,000, Syracuse University Merit Scholarship of $4,000, and need based grant of $14,000. I am single parent with $78,000 income , no support from father etc. She also received invitation to the Renee Crown University Honors Program. The GPA to maintain the merit scholarships was 2.5. D did not choose to attend but they were very generous I thought. Good luck!!
