Money Issues

I’ve heard that financial aid at Brown isn’t very good, which is a concern to me because i will need a lot in order to afford an expensive school. So, is this true? Also, I’ve heard that there are many rich students at Brown, and is that felt or is money not really a topic?

Money is NOT a topic. I was not eligible for Financial Aid this year, but it appears I will be in the near future when I discussed it with them (after spending some money in my name over the course of a year or two + my sister entering college may result in a significant fin-aid package for me because I'm just over the cusp now). Anyway, I have heard terrible things about Financial Aid here but I've found them to be reasonable and my understanding is that they've been given far more money recently than they have been in the past.

I found the fin aid office to be extremely cheap (taking my outside scholarship money out of my grants instead of loans).

That's rather standard. It's loans first for need, then grants, at every school I spoke to them.

Works backwards when taking away.

Yeah, but that's not what it said on the letter thing they sent out. You could list your preference to have it taken out of either your loans, your expected student contribution, or have it put toward a laptop. Taking it out of grants was not listed.

All you can do is look at the package when you are accepted. You can't really go on what you 'hear' because every case is different and you won't know if what they offer is good or not until you open the envelopes. Brown gave dd an amazingly great assistance package.

plus you can always appeal for more aid

Money should not be a concern, you'll always find a way to get those little green bstrds.
