Hey guys. I'm a rising senior who is very interested in NYU's Arts and Sciences school. I've heard that NYU is known for it's really bad financial aid. is this true? are there any scholarships given out by NYU? thanks in advance.

i got 25k/yr from NYU in free money. (trustee scholarship + chancellors grant)
and 4k in work study

i thought it was a pretty good package (it was better than fordham & pace’s package)

The avg financial aid package is about $20K according to several websites. The reason it’s considered bad is because a lot of people still can’t really afford the $50K tuition after the financial aid.

And there are scholarships given out by NYU, but they’re give to like the only 5-10% of the applicants. [NYU > Undergraduate Admissions > Financial Aid > Scholarships](<a href=“Undergraduate Admissions”>Undergraduate Admissions)

Financial aid stinks.

If you have a high EFC NYU will expect you to pony it ALL up.

My son’s scholarship was increased from 30K to 32K for 2009-2010
He has $3000 in WS, 5500 in subsidized stafford and 2400 in Perkins loans for this year. I pay the rest (which will be about 12-14K). My EFC was 12K for this upcoming year (his junior year).

We are happy with NYU’s FA.

My son was not a Presidential Scholar, but his SAT scores were very high and NYU has been very generous to us and we are very grateful for that!

My son will still graduate with nearly 30K in stafford/perkins loans.
I have been paying my portion out of savings (lived like a pauper for the past decade to be able to do this)

I love the “chancellor’s grant” lol. Like seriously I just called them and was like I want more money and they gave me 2K extra :D. I laughed at how easy it was. I talked to a rep for like 5 minutes tops. lol

Oh so some people do get $30+K for FA from NYU! I hope they’re that generous to me. I would predict my EFC isn’t going to be much.

What’s the chancellor’s grant?

It’s just some extra money they put aside for those who need more money. Fancy name for it though haha.

NYU gives out 48K sometimes too. :)

^haha lucky (I’m assuming you’re talking about yourself)

but yeah it’s just a way for NYU to pacify ppl who are upset with their packages. I mean honestly if I really was unhappy with my package and extra 2K wouldn’t have convinced me to go, but I knew I could get the extra money if I asked so of course I took advantage of the oppurtunity. I would still be going to NYU regardless of how the “chancellors grant”. I mean the max they give out is like 5K extra. lol

What’s considered a high EFC? And have they been known to increase financial aid for ED acceptances, if lack of aid may prevent them from attending?

An example of a high EFC is 40k or 50k. There may be a one in a million exception, but they’ll expect you to pay the 40k or 50k and might give you a grant/scholarship for the difference. I don’t get the sense that their financial aid really differs if you apply ED or RD. Which ever way you apply, they might increase the financial aid if they really want you (like having really high SAT scores). But if you’re a run-of-the-mill admit, probably won’t get much more.

Gotcha. Thanks!

One more thing: by “financial aid” for those with EFC less than 40K, does that mean mostly loans?
