Since NYU is located in NYC i expect there to be a lot of rich, spoiled kids wearing designer clothing and spending $$ like there's no tomorrow, but i'm not one who likes to be stereotype, so i'm not going to stereotype others too. do you have to have a lot of money to survive in the public scene at nyu?? its been an anxiety of mine since my family is fine but isn't too "well off" andddd i like to party :] so i'm wondering if the party scene at nyu is more clubbing or actual house parties and on a scale of 1 to 10 [10 being ultimate best], how would you rate the party scene at nyu??

It depends. Clubbing all the time is very expensive. You can usually sneak in, but if you’re a guy, expect to pay twenty+ dollar covers. I’ve been to a lot of house parties here, and I have to say I like them more. It’s less expensive and less crowded. Partying in NYC is expensive. Whether you’re going to bars or clubs, you’re going to spend some cash.

Also remember, comparatively, NYU isn’t a big party school.

Believe it or not, NYU is actually a diverse school. Rich kids aren’t the only ones there. Do keep in mind that it’s not at all a party school - if you want Greek life it’s not the place to go.

Money will 100% not be an issue. The vast majority of my friends here are on a budget and many have jobs, including myself. There are of course, the students with endless bank accounts, but no more than any other school. So money? Don’t worry about it. HOWEVER, I do not recommend NYU for any sort of social scene. Clubbing is expensive and not an environment conducive to meeting people. House parties won’t exist for at least your first year because no one has ventured to Brooklyn to get a house. If you want to party, look elsewhere. Personally, I would give NYU a 3 on a scale of 1-10 in terms of partying.

I’m not sure who posted this before, but it gave me a pretty good idea of the party scene at NYU. I’d take a look at it, it seems pretty educational.

there are alot of free and reduced price tickets for students to events at NYU and around the city. Alot of the eating places around NYU cater to students on a budget – it is all relative I guess to how expensive things are where you live though. My kids have taken me to places to eat that are far better value than what I get for comparable food in the suburbs where I live!

Just from what I gather as a parent (and granted, I’m sure there’s plenty I don’t know about!!), it seems to me that alot of parties are groups of friends gathered in a dorm room (and alot of them are suites / apartment style with common areas).

The social scene is horrible. That’s part of the reason why I’m transferring out of this disorganized institution. Honestly, the party scene is lame. The “parties” normally consist of 10 (or less) people cramped inside a dorm room with cheap alcohol. It’s never worth it though, since these groups are usually caught and written up within minutes. If you can get ahold of a fake ID, then your social life may be a little bit better…however, all of the clubs and bars around here (like everything else) are outrageously expensive. Don’t waste your time or money.

The party scene is amazing if you know where to go. First of all, you need a fake. Once you invest in that, you can get into amazing clubs and lounges for free if you’re a girl, have a few friends, and walk in with a promoter. But you absolutely 100% need a fake. If you prefer house parties, Greek life is the way to go. People bash Greek life at NYU because they haven’t tried it and don’t know anything about it, but as a Greek myself, I can tell you that frats have awesome parties in their lofts/apartments. They also host them at clubs and bars. These are free for girls, of course. Greek life expanded this year to 10% of the NYU undergrad population, so I would check that out if you want a great party scene.

I’ve seen the video ionbeam211 posted, and it definitely glamorizes the party scene at NYU. Plus, most of those shots are from Halloween parties… One day out of the year isn’t a great representation.
Anyway, it’s true, a lot of students at NYU are very wealthy and into the $500/night clubbing and bar-hopping scene. However, you won’t have trouble finding people who will be cool with just getting a few bottles and chilling out. You don’t NEED a fake to party here. Save yourself $100+ and just ask which bars/stores don’t card (there are quite a few).

yes fairy011, we know you hate everything about NYU. You’ve made that very clear on many threads.

As far as partying goes; I’ve never met a person that ‘spends $500/night’. The only decent parties I know of always happen off campus and aren’t necessarily expensive. It depends on who you know and where you go.

I’m not the “party” type at all… even with the party scenes in video ionbeam211 posted, it’s not just me. I’m hoping there will be some people at NYU who will feel the same way!

Personally, I’m not a party type either; which is one of the reasons I came to NYU. Since dorm parties are shut down very quickly, it avoids the stereotypical ‘frat parties’ or ‘dorm parties’. (I transferred from a large public school where these were very prevalent). I find the culture at NYU to be very different, which I think has to do with the type of student NYU attracts. We don’t have a ‘sports culture’, so I think plays at least some role in NYU not being a very large party-type school.

That said, you shouldn’t have any problems finding other people that don’t party! Have you been accepted yet? If so, are you going to attend?

@NYU2013 That’s good to hear! At least it is in city, so there’s a lot more to do then partying and what not!

And I’m an “early-bird” here… I haven’t applied (yet), I’m a junior in high school right now. Of course I can only dream right now about being accepted… a lot of work ahead for me!

@HelloParis

Good luck! I started “dreaming” about NYU since 10th grade and haven’t stopped since! Now I’m just waiting for my decision by April!!
