Money vs. Heart/Interest

Hey Everyone,

When it comes to architectural formal education, would you say going with the seemingly more reasonably priced school for your current and future financial situation always trumps going with the school that holds your interest more/excites you more (e.g. greater variety of electives and research centers that you may not get at the other school)?

Note: I'm going into a M. Arch 3+ program (background isn't in design)

Thanks.

I’m just looking for fresh dialogue about the topic. Please respond.

Thanks.

Unless it will put you in significant debt, I would go to the school that excites and interests you more. What schools are you considering? And what are metrics on the price differentials?

Without specifics the question is tough to answer. Would I take on $50,000 in debt to attend Harvard over UNCC? Yes. Would I take on the same debt to attend WashU over UT Austin? No. It just comes down to the quality of the individual schools and the potential impact on your career.

There are some really outstanding graduate programs at state universities, and unless you are looking at one of the Ivy League programs, I would save my money.
