I believe that my mom is going to get me a debit card from a bank near where we live(and there are a lot). I was wondering what banks are near UB. Also, my mom wants to know when is she suppose to start paying for tuition and meal plans.
And this question is not related to money, but I received my orientation kit, and it says something about family orientation... Anyway I was wondering if i can go to my orientation by myself with out my family. Also, if it really is necessary to go since I live kinda far away.
Thanks

There are lots of banks near UB, I would say HSBC or M&T are the 2 biggest in the Buff. area. You should go to the orientation if you can, you will feel so much more confident when you get to campus in August. You will get a bill, usually once you register for classes. I think we didn’t get our first bill til August of D freshmen yr.

m&T is what i have- it is a great choice.
yes, you can go to orientation by yourself.

Here is the link I found when I investigated your questions myself a while ago:

Bills and payment info is on top right and scroll down for banking information (banks and ATM’s on campus).
As my son does not need a bank, just an ATM, I will be opening up an acct for him (debit card checking and savings) to use for school at Bank of America. My older son has his acct at BOA so I will hopefully make 1 trip to make deposits for both. I check my sons balances online and I get “low balance alert” emails, if he dips below $100. (We set up this amount although you can do it at any am’t you indicate.) this has been a good feature as there are times my son does not check his balance and doesn’t know he needs more money.

Thanks, for the replies. I understand what I have to do about the money and bank part. My biggest concern for the orientation is that it starts at 9 am, that means i would have to take a late night bus by myself. So… kinda scary…

magic - If one of your parents wishes to accompany you, there is a hotel (Ramada or Marriott) directly adjacent to campus, near the Ellicott complex. Where are you coming from? Perhaps someone else from your HS/area will be attending and you can take the bus together.

I was also wondering if I need to sign up for the orientation or am I automatically expected to go?

You will receive your assigned orientation dates from UB, then you register online (and register your parent(s) if they decide to attend).

I think I already signed up for the orientation. I’m not sure. I got a mail that says be yourself at UB orientation 2009. It in, it told me to submit my orientation data form, get connected, register for classes, and attend summer orientation. After that, I got the be ready orientation kit, which told me which date my orientation is. I can’t find a link or number to call to confirm that I am going.

The telephone number is in the Orientation Kit on the cover letter about 3/4 down. I had called it myself to get info and change my sons date. They were helpful (Horray!!)
The number is: 1-877-434-0665

Can you fly? I checked into flight out of NY- JFK/LGA and LI but they were all super early or got in too late. Maybe there is a good flight for you.

Other than that, orientation is not mandatory. Freshmen get up to school Thurs or Fri before school starts so you’ll have time to get yourself ready. If you do not go up, just connect with the orientation dept and on this thread or with someone you know to see if there was anything specifically you missed.

Yes, you’ve done everything you need to do for orientation registration. Don’t forget to also do your health form and send in your 2x2 photo so your ID card is ready at orientation. You also need to do meal plan selection at some point, and the health insurance waiver if you don’t need the UB plan.

Is the Marriott the Courtyard Marriot in Amherst? This is what I found on line. Ready to book for orientation.

Thanks, my mom plans on getting me the gold meal plan since it’s my first time going and it’s only 150 difference from silver.
I’ll try calling tomorrow and ask if it really is necessary to go.
Thanks again=)

I know this thread is a couple of months old, but thought I’d update for info on M&T checking as it’s getting to be that time…

M&T has an ATM in the Student Union and a branch across the street from South Campus. They do have alot of branches upstate, but understand that’s not true for the NYC area. They have a college checking account with no monthly fees, and refund up to 4 foreign ATM transaction fees per month (both the M&T and the other banks fees up to $2/transaction are rebated). Incoming wire transfer are free as well. First 50 printed checks are free and they offer online access/bill pay at no charge.
