Monkeypox outbreaks

The solutions are certainly debatable, but the historical context of AIDS transmission was researched and described in great detail in this paper, providing a candid and truthful rendering of what happened.

Experts are jumping up and down about monkeypox saying this is playing out just like AIDS, so this paper is entirely applicable. It provides clear observations like the fact that having anonymous partners is dangerous for transmission, and makes contact tracing impossible.

I wish I could look up monkeypox to learn how it spreads without seeing any photos. I’m curious to know how it spread to children and esp the source of the information (medical or the news).

I usually just google the term and cdc.

Per CDC: "The pediatric cases were traced to individuals in the men who have sex with men community, Walensky said, noting that the children “are doing well.”

Thank you. When I tried googling the photos that popped up made me wince. I’d really like to know how it was transmitted to children. Guess I’ll hear eventually.

Seems pretty obvious. This was stated to be household transmission. Children, especially infants and toddlers…who are the children at issue, are obviously closely cared for by those in their household with much skin to skin contact and often sharing of household items like blankets and linens which has been said to be a source of transmission.

Exactly. Here from the CDC:

Monkeypox spreads in different ways. The virus can spread from person-to-person through:

  • direct contact with the infectious rash, scabs, or body fluids

  • respiratory secretions during prolonged, face-to-face contact, or during intimate physical contact, such as kissing, cuddling, or sex

  • touching items (such as clothing or linens) that previously touched the infectious rash or body fluids

  • pregnant people can spread the virus to their fetus through the placenta

To state the obvious, it is not good that this is spreading to the general population, including kids now. I agree with what Scott Gottlieb tweeted today:

If we have allowed monkeypox to become an endemic virus in the U.S. — which is becoming an increasingly possible outcome — it will be among the most unfortunate public health failures in recent times.

Thanks for the info. Just what I was looking for, spread via direct contact or touching items.

The children who have monkeypox have close proximity to the male gay community. Nobody has said you get it from “touching items”.

Per above post from @Mwfan1921 who reported on the CDC’s findings. So, yes the CDC did say you get it from touching items an infected person may have touched.

Let’s just say I’m not worrying about monkeypox. But I am worried about the toddler and infant.

I’m not worried at all either. But people will be worried if it indeed does spread by touching things. People weren’t worried about Covid at all either until it started spreading and they knew people who got it.

Not exactly the same thing.

Here’s a recent paper on Monkeypox. Two interesting observations are that many people that became ill with this virus were immunocompromised due to HIV-positive status (around 40% and I’m guessing on antiretroviral therapy) and that Monkeypox DNA was detected in seminal fluid of the majority of those tested. So transmission seems also possible (but not confirmed) without the virus-filled pox lesions. I didn’t read the whole article because there are too many images of lesions for my morning literature review (that really should not include the New England Journal of medicine but anyway…)

The monkey pox outbreak has spread outside the gay community, and is detectable in wastewater samples in several cities suggesting an even larger outbreak than current stats show.

FDA expanded the monkeypox vaccine label today to allow another company to manufacture and distribute the vaccine.

I’m going to speak frankly: Posts that refer to gay people as “they,” with veiled allusions to the lifestyles and actions of LGBT people in a manner which is judgmental and homophobic, are going to be removed. Likewise, graphic descriptions with objectionable words are going to be removed.

If anyone is unable to resist the urge to make such comments, please refrain from from commenting on this thread.

This is bad. It’s a toddler and an infant. Children who are younger than approximately 9 months when they contract chicken pox can get very sick. Their immune systems are not mature enough to respond quickly to the infection, so they can become overwhelmed by the virus. Monkeypox is much more severe than chicken pox, so I’d imagine that the infant would be at high risk of very severe infection. They’re both receiving an antiviral medication.

Our county board of health has prioritized commercial sex venue workers who have had multiple partners in the last 21 days, and those with certain current STDs, for access to the monkeypox vaccine.
