MONMOUTH? any thoughts?

anyone know much about monmouth University in NJ. I got a early fin aid application, filled it out, and was told id get 15k in scholarship based on merit per year. should i apply? will it be worth it?

anyone had any experience with monmouth? reputation?

I thought it was a big commuter school.

I live about 15-20 minutes from it in NJ. It's not a bad school, but it is a suitcase school with most of the kids from NJ and a good chunk going home for the weekend. A friend of mine goes to MU, and he finds it pretty easy (he got almost a full ride there). It has an okay reputation in NJ. However, judging from your stats you certainly could do better than Monmouth, as it probably wouldn't provide the most intellectually stimulating environment (big party school!). Monmouth isn't the cheapest school either. If your family can't afford to pay, you'll get need-based aid for sure, so don't fret about that.

I don't think that it is worth it. It is a beautiful campus, along the beach. Class sizes are small, and I believe the college is in the competitive category (could be wrong, but a B student should not have trouble gaining admission). The expensive part is that after freshman year, housing seems to be a problem. Most students seem to move off campus into houses, and condos along the beach. Realistically, one would need to have a car to get to and from class. I feel that a lot of the scholarship money would be eaten up by car expenses. I don't know what housing costs are in this area. If you were planning on having a car, and all of the expenses that go with a car, regardless of where you go, then you might consider Monmouth, and checking out the housing costs.

Monmouth County, NJ has some of the hottest real eastate in the country. For a student of your caliber and for the scholarship offered it isn't worth it. You can do better, for less money probably.

I agree with Willmingtonwave. I think that you would be better off going to one of the Sunys. JMO.

I live about five minutes away from from Monmouth University. It is a really pretty campus, but is not the best school academically. Personally i dont think that it is worth the money.

I got the same letter in the mail. Like everyone else has said, the campus is really beautiful, but it isn't the best school as far as academics go. All you need is a 1200 for their honors program. I had a friend who was going to go there, but they lost her housing application. The school is like an hour away, so she couldn't commute. Now she goes to Rutgers, and is extremely happy there.

Monmouth county sucks. Monmouth U is not worth it. It's a dull area(jersey beach is gross), even though Long Branch and Red Bank are close, they are really boring after about 2 times of going there.

FWIW my English teacher's son is a student at Monmouth and my teacher thinks very highly of it (and she's very college-savvy), but after reading some of the above comments, I'd personally have second thoughts...

thanks so much guys. ill toss that letter out. ive worked too hard these past 4 years to settle. :-)

yeah don't go to monmouth
i attended nj's governor's school there and it's not great
the college professors (princeton phds) that were our instructors thought very badly of the school, the lack of facilities, and the administration, also the speakers we got from monmouth were all really bad
however, depending on what you want, i'd say it may be a good school for social work, and there's a center for disaster preparedness (or something like that) that's connected with dept of homeland security

"ive worked too hard these past for years to settle"

dude, you have to start thinking realistically. you want to go to schools that have big names - but you can't afford it unless they give you a full ride - and it seems that you're completely unwilling to take out loans (which is stupid imo). unless you have the $ or take out a loan, you're going to have to "settle" for a school in which you KNOW you'll receive merit money. quite frankly, i think you're being a bit naive. either step up - take out $140,000 in loans and go to the best school you can get into, or go to suny on a full ride.
