mono - how would you handle?

2girlsmom - thanx for your update - you really sound relieved :) glad you paid her visit - probably made a huge difference

Will count the days with you :)

Hopefully your gal is on the mend

She should seriously consider postponing the midterms if her condition warrants it. Brains don't work so well when you are so sick!!!

Just spoke with her this morning - she sounds so much better! Her throat is not sore at all anymore - she does have a follow-up with the doctor this afternoon. She sounded very perky, and was off to class.

Hopefully she is going to be one of the lucky ones that has a short course of it.

Just FYI - don't know if it made any difference at all, but when I first found out about her diagnosis, I did some research as to supplements that may help, and came up with mega-doses of Vit C, B-vitamins, and Zinc. So she is taking 4000 mg/day (divided) of Vit C, 2 of her B-complex vitamins, and has been using the Zinc lozenges several times a day, in addition to her one-a-day type vitamin.

Again, don't know if it made any difference, but these are all vitamins that should be excreted if not needed, so I felt that it was worth a try. Food for thought......

I realize that the fatigue is going to linger a long time - again, anxious to get her home this weekend and see how she actually feels - she may crash and sleep for a week over spring break.

Thanks everyone!

Great news!! :)

Those vitamin supps certainly won't hurt - and actually I agree - will help :D

Glad she will be home - gee maybe even will enjoy a bit of pampering LOL

Good luck to you and her :)

Please warn her to not overdue it at the first sign of feeling better.
My senior son has been sick since October. We aren't sure when the Mono actually started. He had a week in October where he couldn't get out of bed. Sore throat. The Dr cultured the throat and it came back positive for an unusual bacteria that can cause a severe sore throat. Over the next several months he kept getting sick. Visits to the Dr. He would get better for a few weeks and then have fever and sore throat and fatigue all over again. He missed more school in the first semester of his senior year then he did in his entire previous 11 yrs. In January they finally did a mono test after him barely being able to make it to class for finals. The mono test was positive. He has since had problems with his tonsils. He needs them out but doesn't have the time. He just had another week where he missed 2 days of school with a 103 fever. The Dr feels until he gets the tonsils out he will keep getting every germ that passes his way.
I wish we had pushed for the mono test earlier. By the time we figured out what it was he had already missed so much school and the first semester was just over. He barely passed AP CALC on the block schedule since even when he dragged himself to school he didn't feel well.

mom60, I am so sorry to hear of the hard time that your son is having such a hard time. Any chance of getting his tonsils out over spring break, or is that a long enough period of time?

You are so right about not overdoing it - I've been feeling so optimistic today about how dd is doing.....then she had her follow-up this afternoon with her doctor - doctor warned her of same thing.......said it is not at all uncommon to get to feeling much better, and then wake up one morning, and wham, its back with a vengeance.

4-1/2 days and counting.......(till spring break)!!
