Monologue Character Age

I know that we should choose monologues that are age appropriate, but what if we come off as younger? In real life people who don't know me often think I am younger than I actually am (because of my short stature, not maturity-wise XD). I'm 16 and can be seen as even 12 or 13 depending on what I wear. So, should I choose monologues from this age group? Or should I stick with more of a 16-18 age group?

[I also posted this under a thread of the same name in the NYU/Tisch Forum]

And is it the same for song choice as well?

I’m just wondering because if I’m likely to be cast younger, should I then audition for colleges as younger?

My opinion for material for college auditions is that you look for appropriate material for the 16 to 22 she group. Colleges are not casting you in a particular show, and a major part of what they are looking for us potential for growth. Tween material will be limiting to you because it will not necessarily show vocal range… If it was written for a child, nor will it show maturity range in the case of monologue selection. Others may feel differently, but that is my take. I would keep the “younger” rep in your pocket for auditions where you may be specifically auditioning for young role in a production.

Ok, I have a question kind of along these lines. I really want to use a monologue from The Heidi Chronicles (the one where she makes a speech about the gym locker room and that we’re not in this together). Even though her character is older, I feel like that’s a great monologue to connect with and own even for young people. Is it passable or would that be a bad idea?

How much older is the character?

If the school info states “contemporary monologue” can you use one from a musical?

purple…most schools prefer a monologue to be from a play and not a musical. I would not do one from a musical in case certain schools do not allow that and you don’t want to have to prepare more monos than necessary.
