Some schools want a 1 minute length, some have a 2 minute length (per type classical/contemp.) For those with the wisdom of experience, did you just use a 1 minute length across the board, or did you have a longer monologue for the schools with more time allowed? Just wondering if we really need those variations.
We had a couple of cuts.
Agree with @Jkellynh17. My S and D1 had cuts of varying lengths. D2 is working on hers now and will do the same. I will say that none of my kids’ cuts ran the full 2 minutes (I think the D1 had the longest at about 95ish seconds).
Exactly, a little short is fine, but I wouldn’t take a one-minute piece to a two-minute audition.
Thanks! That’s what I thought. But then this little nagging voice in my head wanted to make things easier.
I used different cuts for different prescreen requirements, but for the actual auditions I recall using the same cuts for every audition. I can’t necessarily recommend disregarding time restraints, but that’s what I did and in my case it was fine. All of my monologues were about 90 seconds. Some schools can be very strict–I’ve heard of this mostly being the case with musical theater programs, tho. I haven’t heard of someone being cut off at an acting audition.
Indeed it is very common to be asked for more at acting auditions. I just think it’s smart to follow directions. There are so many reasons you can get cut. Why not eliminate the ones you can control.
It’s a good habit to get in for professional auditions too. My D did NETC last year and when they say X time- they MEAN they want X time. If the schools wants to see more, they will ask your for it.
Not sure if this fits the same criteria, but last week I submitted a 2 monologue pre-screen that listed a very specific 90 second limit (Per monologue). I wound up not seeing it until after already submitting them, and realized my monologues were both like a minute over the time-frame.
I actually passed the pre-screen, but was told in the email that if the monologues went over the limit at the actual audition, they’d have timers set that automatically stop you once the allotted time is passed. I’m guessing if that happened you’d automatically be disqualified.
Anyway, I’m planning on implementing various cuts for each school depending on length. The only issue with that though is it’s VERY easy to mess up a line when trying to remember various different cut versions of the same monologue.
