Monologue Questions Asked at Auditions

Hi, all! In preparation for auditions this fall, I've started picking out monologues I really like and reading the plays they're from. My coach told me we should start working on them even though I'll probably find more, just to practice getting in the habit of preparing a monologue. As I read the plays, he gave me a homework assignment. Since college reps often ask questions about monologues at auditions, he told me to start preparing for that by coming up with three questions I think they might ask, so I can both understand my monologue and myself as an actor more, but also so I don't react poorly under pressure, and can be confident in my responses. I thought I would share my three with CC (please hold your laughter if they are laughably obvious or terribly off-track), but also I thought future auditioners could all benefit from the experiences people who have been there and done that. What questions about your monologue were you asked at college auditions? Were you prepared to be asked questions or were you caught off guard? How do you think your response went? :) Thanks, guys!

Why did you choose this monologue?

How do you think the character opposite the one you're playing is reacting or feeling during the monologue and how do they end up responding?

What is your character trying to achieve by saying this, and how do you think they feel at the end of it?

In my interview for the UNCSA drama high school program, I was asked how I connected with speaker of one of my monologues, who in that case was Tamora from Titus Andronicus. I was very new to the interviewing process and was trying to project my personality…to the extent that I believe it overshadowed my insight.

Good luck!

I think you are on the right track, disneygirl. One question I have heard that they ask is, kindof similar to your number 3, about the “journey” that the character you are playing goes through over the course of the monologue.
