My S has a few monologues already and is happy with them, but he has also been looking for a comedic one. Does anyone have any suggestions on male comedic contemporary monologues?

It’s easier to find comedic ones than dramatic ones!

You probably know that the monologues for college auditions should be within reasonable striking distance of being age appropriate. That makes it difficult, as few contemporary plays have large roles for late-teen early-20s guys. Neil Simon is one of the few playwrights who does have these characters.

A trick I have discovered is to look for online lists of overdone monologues. Don’t do those monologues, necessarily, but they will clue you in about plays that have roles for the right age group. Often there are other monologues elsewhere in these plays, or you can craft a monologue out of several speeches.

You can do the same with monologue books (the kind where the monologues are taken from actual plays – never use the monologues that were written just to be monologues).

Note that sometimes a comedy play can contain a dramatic monologue, or vice versa. One of my son’s comedic monologues was from the drama “Twilight of the Golds” – I should add that one of the college representatives questioned whether he was too young for that monologue. But my son explained that he interpreted the character as college-aged, and that fit with the text, so it was OK!

Probably not a big help, but the best investment my son probably made was hiring a coach for a two hours of time to talk about monologues. The process wasn’t to get him to do monologues and coach them on them, but to talk to him, discuss what he loved and what he doesnt’ t like and throw out suggestions. Helped tremendously. If that’s not possible, depending on where you live, maybe he could ask his drama teacher to help?

UVaHoo87, your comment reminds me to remind other posters here PLEASE to update your CC profile to show where you live. For instance, say UVaHoo87 lives in Charlottesville (just making that up based on the UVa). Another CC reader who is looking for a coach in Central Virginia might want to PM UVaHoo87 to ask for the coach’s name.

I’ve also seen many postings along the lines of “We are going to depend a lot on financial aid and my daughter doesn’t want to go too far from home” with no geographical indication given, whereas if we all knew the poster was in a particular state, someone might have insight about a particularly good nearby program with great financial aid available.

HOW TO DO IT: Scroll to the top. Under the banner ads you will see a pale blue menu bar that goes across the whole screen. Click on “My Control Panel.” When a new screen comes up, click on “Edit Your Details.” Update the field called “Where You Live.” (It is also helpful to update the “User Type -What Best Describes You” to indicate if you are a parent or a student.) Then SAVE CHANGES, and your location will begin to appear under your user name.

This can help everyone help one another.
