Ok I need a good source for teen female monologues and I figured you guys would know one right off. This is not for a college audition just one in general. My D is having a devil of a time finding new ones
I think the tricky part is that they don’t recommend using monologues from a “source” (website, monologue books etc) but reading the whole dang play. Finding monologues was far harder than finding songs for my D
any suggestions on where to start? My D is overwhelmed and doesn’t even know where to begin. She is such a song girl and will search for songs forever but when the monologues come up she grunts…
Try reading some works from Theresa Rebeck - she has some younger characters with interesting monologues. Or Brooke Berman’s The Triple Happiness or Amy Herzog’s After the Revolution. These are all more contemporary playwrights. As far as classical goes Shakespeare has some interesting female characters. Or Tartuffe by Moliere.
D has used Neil Labute. There are also some great monologues in “almost, Maine” by John Cariani. Probably overdone - esp for college (show is one of most commonly produced for schools etc) but it has some fun options
You may want to call The Drama Book Shop in NYC. 212.944.0595 (I think; confirm the ##). I’ve gotten some great ideas on helping build a rep. Good luck.
I will also say using a coach on a limited basis to help select monologues can be a very good thing to do. I agree that it is difficult to go through the huge number of plays available to find shows and characters that suit you.
An audition coach as mentioned will be able to steer you in the right direction.
My daughter isn’t at the college audition coach point yet she’s a junior. This is for something not college audition related. Figured this forum would be a good resource to ask .
@theaterwork, junior year is an excellent time to start with a college audition coach. I kid you not.
We will most likely utilize one at some point, a local person from the university that has an MT program nearby. and yes, mainly for monologue help. D has her voice teacher who will help with song selection as she has helped others who have auditioned and knows what to concentrate on. I just haven’t pursued it yet this year as it is only Sept and we are just trying to get back into the school thing in general.
