Monroe Hall?

So I am incoming freshman, and I was just wondering if Monroe hall is actually something I should go for when requesting dorms. In the description for Monroe scholars they throw in that they get to stay in Monroe hall as if it is a huge bonus, but then I looked it up and it doesn't seem overly impressive. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated

Congrats on the Monroe Scholarship.

You’re right, there’s nothing really special about Monroe. It’s not even the best quality freshmen housing because that’s definitely DuPont, imo. The biggest plus about the dorm is its location, especially its proximity to WaWa.

I guess the biggest benefit of Monroe is that you’ll have the opportunity to meet other Monroe Scholars. I’ve heard that they have an even more than typical W&M studious reputation if you’re into that. But I mean no matter where you live though you’ll meet a lot of interesting people that you’ll end up being friends with…

Thanks for the info. I’ve been trying to see what people say about it, and for the most part the consensus seems to be along what you said: good, but not the best. I think I’ll end up just staying with it as my request though, since I figure there is a better chance of me getting that and at least knowing I have a good dorm, rather than opting for “large” or “small” dorms and getting stuck with one of the not-so-great ones.

It’s hard to explain why Monroe is so amazing. You should just live there and find out. Besides, it means you won’t have to worry about ending up in Botetourt.

yea… Monroe is just what it is. I wouldn’t consider living there a “perk” but there are definitely worse dorms you could get.

Both Monroe and non-Monroe Scholars live in Monroe Hall however Residence Life does its best to match Monroes with other Monroes by room and by hall. While Monroe may not be the most ammenity-filled facility, the ceilings are high, the location is great, and the attic is a really nice social space. Plus it’s a medium-size dorm so not too big and not too small. The students who have lived in Monroe Hall however tend to really relish the experience socially.

Can a Monroe Scholar choose a non-scholar to be their roommate in Monroe Hall?
