Has anyone received a Monroe scholar notification yet? I think last year they came out around March 5th.

Well, that’s nervewracking. I’m the kind of student that if I didn’t make Monroe, then I didn’t get in at all because of my not-superbly strong extracurriculars and essays, so now I’m really nervous Monroe notification is by snail mail correct?

yes via snail mail. same hear cant wait to hear.

Most scholarship notifications will be released next week (likely early part of the week) and they are released via snail mail. We sometimes do name a few a scholarships during Committee and those students are notified in early April when the other regular decision notifications go out

W&M Admission - can you explain “Committee” to us? Your statement above implies that some Monroe scholars are identified through a process that does not involve Committee, while others are identified only though Committee.

Does this mean that some students are admitted without going through Committee?

For instance, is Committee principally for “close calls” on the admit decision, while students that do not go to through Committee are “clear admits” based on decisions outside the Committee (e.g, perhaps based solely on the determination of the two members whose review the application). If so, what criteria are used to decide whether a student needs to go through Committee at all?

I know the website says top 10-15% are offered Monroe, but what is the gpa range and SAT/ACT scores for this, and do extracurriculars count?

sjb1666, you’re correct. Committee is used to assist us in making the closest calls. Every application is read through twice by two different members of our staff. If both readers agree that the applicant is clearly very strong, the application will be sent to our Senior Associate Dean who will decide to admit the student or our Associate Dean will send the file back to the regional dean to bring to Committee.

The remaining files, those not admitted by our Senior Association Dean Committee process where any decision is still on the table. There’s no set criteria for who goes to Committee and who

Most Monroes are such supurb applicants that they are admitted before Committee and are also reviewed for Monroe before our Committee process begins. However, in some cases, applicants need Committee review and from that review they are determined to not only be admits but also Monroes.

dcgirl3, everything is considered when reviewing a Monroe (grades, courses, test scores, extracurricular, recommendations, essays, etc.) Generally, Monroes are the top students in our pool especially in terms of academics. There is no GPA range since W&M has no average GPA but they are generally at the top of their class (so they are making predominantly As in very strong courses) and they usually have a 1470 (Critical Reading + Math) or a 33 or higher. These aren’t cut-offs. Everyone is reviewed for Monroe. But these are a good benchmark for the profile of Monroe. We also generally see an intellectual bent or curiosity in these students that surpasses that of most other students in our pool. We often see that intellectual curiosity in recommendations, essays, or sometimes in extracurricular activities pursued.

W&M Admission,
You guys are amazing (I’m assuming more than one poster) You answer many questions on here and it really makes me appreciate the school even more! Thanks for keeping us informed! Also do you ever sleep??? I see you post at all hours!

ceresma, generally it’s one member of our staff doing the posting just so that we can be consistent and up to date on all of the threads but whether it’s one of us or all of us, we’re happy to be helping prospective students and families navigate the college search and application process.

As for our odd hours, during reading season, odd hours are a must. Once the application season ends, our hours return to normal and we’ll generally be posting on weekdays only.

Do we know if the Monroe Scholarship Notifications were mailed???

They will likely go out in tomorrow morning’s mail

Do we know if they went out in the mail yet? Sitting on pins and needles here!

also are they sent first class or priority?

We got something in the mail today from W&M - could it be Monroe Notification?

Guess I should go look it up online and see what it is. D is not home and I just happened to be working from home today. This next few weeks will be a roller coaster for sure.

do you mind sharing d’s stats? and are you a Va resident?

Just wondering – are early decision candidates eligible for Monroe scholarships? If so when do they hear (or did they already)?

The mail is always sent standard without any extra fast priority-type shipping. We do not post any decisions online. All we post online is when decisions are released (and we’re speaking of mass decisions – ED and RD notifications – scholarship notifications are a very small percentage of our pool so we put them in the mail but do not do any extra online posting).

Early decision candidates were reviewed for all scholarships and, if they received one, those notifications were sent in the same mailing as the one sent to the RD scholarship recipients (that mailing left our office Wednesday afternoon).

All ED admits will receive a new and updated admit pac and those will be sent next week

Household #23 is very pleased to announce that our S is a Monroe Scholar Congratulations to all the students who were awarded this Scholarship. On a side note…our S will dorm in Monroe Hall…just as his dad did in 1984. Dad is trying to remember his room number… LOL

Congrats berliner. Very cool that father and son will share a common freshman residence hall experience!

Does Monroe Hall have AC?
