To repeat what roamingcooks posted in the Dorms thread:

"Monroe and Sharp are the social/party dorms. Monroe has been renovated, Sharp has not. Sharp has more people per floor, so if you feel your best bet for making friends is interacting with a bigger group of people, then choose Sharp. If newer carpeting and smaller groupings are important, choose Monroe. "

At either you could get placed on a relatively quiet or loud floor. When I filled out the forms for my dorm MANY years ago I said something about my stereo. They put me on a floor where we all were very into music. Yeah, it was loud, really loud.

Meh, if you don’t care about the carpet flip a coin.

alright i just visited and i honestly can’t tell you the difference between the two but four different people from the school told me not to live in sharp. so i’m going to take their advice. they said it was dirty or something i’m not sure because i’m looking at other dorms but i hope this helps you

There is a bit of a rivalry between Monroe and Sharp, or at least there used to be. So if those were Monroe people telling you that about Sharp, it makes sense. I really think they are virtually the same, and neither is a palace, but hey, many of us survived it.

Sharp and Monroe are pretty much identical in terms of socialness and just about everything. The only legitimate deciding factor would be if you knew people in either one. A lot of athletes get placed in sharp though which can get annoying if youre on their floor.

From what I recall, and this is second hand from my Monroe son (who refused to live in Butler-- wanted the “real” college freshman experience), Sharp had more problems last year (including a small fire in the middle of the night, IIRC).

My S is in Sharp and has quite a few members of the baseball team in his hall. Not a problem at all. He loves Sharp and is very happy with his roommate. Regarding problems: last semester someone took the bathroom door (yes, literally right off its hinges). Door disappeared. Boys were sent e-mails to please return the door. I thought it was funny as I couldn’t imagine where the culprits would hide the door. But it’s college – and they are boys. I’m sure things happen at Monroe, too.
