Monroe Scholar Weekend

Hi,
I received my acceptance letter today. It wasn't much surprise, as I got a similar email a few weeks ago stating that I didn't move to the Murray finalist round, but was accepted as a Monroe Scholar. Yay!

Minor problem, though. First, an inconsistency: the email I received stated that the Monroe Scholars Weekend was April 19-20, whereas the official letter says "the weekend of April 12th." Can anyone confirm which date is correct?

The precise date is irrelevant to the bulk of my question, however. You see, the 19th is my senior prom, and the 12th I was planning on attending a different prom with my girlfriend of three years. I'm not crazy about the idea of missing either one, for obvious reasons.

So my question is: did any current Scholars find the weekend a useful experience? How potentially damaging would it be to miss it? And finally, what is the exact schedule? I was kinda thinking that it might be something like: Saturday, attend classes and meet professors; Saturday evening, follow current students around; Sunday AM, pack up and leave. Is that the case? It would be nice, since that presents the possibility of leaving late Saturday and arriving late to prom (I live ~3 hours away).

Your thoughts? Should I just suck it up, since prom is overrated, anyway? :P

Tadd

lol wow, that’s an early early prom.

Personally? I wouldn’t miss prom. It IS a once in a lifetime thing, while you will be spending enough time at W&M for the next four years that missing out on this little thing probably won’t matter much.

Why don’t you call W&M and find out when the weekend is?? Seems to be the best way to get the right information.

We did go to Monroe Weekend with our daughter last year and she found it pretty helpful. It gave her (and us) a better idea of what being a Monroe Scholar is all about.

I don’t know where you applied but if you are also an Echol Scholar at UVA, it’s a good way to decided which program fits you better which will help factor into where you want to go

If you’re still weighing your options, I’d say try to make it that weekend. If you know W&M is the school for you, then I would definitely go to prom. Prom is awesome. :)

Question - is this Monroe Scholars deal something W&M would have contacted all possible candidates about previously, or will the letters recieved this week be a surprise to most people?

My daughter was accepted ED but didn’t find out that she’d been selected as a Monroe Scholar until around this time last year.

I faced the same decision back when I was a high school senior. I went to prom. But I’d already decided on W&M, anyway.

What is the Monroe Scholar? My son recvd his letter today. We are from California. Thanks so much

I would like to book our hotel for Monroe weekend.
Does anyone know a good hotel?

I think I’m just going to visit this weekend instead of the Monroe Scholar Weekend (just found out today-- very excited!). April is going to be way too busy… I just hope I won’t miss out on all Monroe Scholar Weekend has to offer.

Does it specify in the letter if it is a monroe scholars award?

No, but it is implied

“[benefits of monroe scholars program here]. More information about these and other benefits, as well as a special visitation opportunity on the weekend of April 12 will be arriving in approximately one week from the faculty director of the Monroe Scholars Program”

Oh no! The letters seem to be arriving already for some people! I’m so nervous… but moreover, it’s my first time hearing about this Monroes Scholar program. Should I not even expect to get into the program if I don’t receive a letter from W&M by this week?

The two hotels we’ve stayed in our The Hospitality House which is right across the street from the W&M campus and the Hampton Inn on Richmond Rd. We like staying at the Hospitality House because we can park our car and walk everywhere. Parking on the campus is very difficult.

I didn’t find the actual Monroe scholars portion of the weekend very useful at all. Last year it started on saturday night and continued through sunday.

Saturday night, we ate dinner with a current student, toured the campus, and heard from current students about their Monroe projects. Sunday, I don’t really remember all that well.

Earlier on Saturday, though, they had stuff any accepted student could come to, which was pretty helpful. The best part was open houses with all the departments.
