Montclair State MT and New School University Jazz

I am considering applying to these two schools, the Musical Theatre program at Montclair State and the voice program at the New School University Jazz and Contemporary music Program. Though I have heard from a few people that MSU has a very good music program, I do not know much about their musical theatre program, and I have never heard anything from anyone I know about the NSU Jazz program. I was just wondering if anyone has any information on these 2 schools programs/schools, such as reputation, etc.. I preety much know only what I could find on the website, but could not find much external info.

You really should check out TCNJ. The Music and Music Education programs at TCNJ are top notch. As is the rest of the school.

Toblin: the OP asked about MT. TCNJ doesn't have that.

My bad. Sorry.

Can't say much about MT but to echo what you heard before, MSU is excellent for music.

Housing?

I know that Montclair's been a bit off the radar screen lately, but we're looking for some actual opinions from students there. Can anyone comment on the housing situation? Do students who prefer four years of housing seem to get it? We've heard that if students get the paperwork in on time, it should not be a problem. Unfortunately, we've heard the same from other schools and know that the reality can be quite different. Several folks have suggested MSU's musical theatre program to our son. Usually that type of program involves some rather late hours at the theatre. We'd prefer he'd at least know he'd be living on campus or very near in the later years if he winds up there. Thanks for any and all opinions.

My friend goes to MSU, and he's not happy at all. Well, I don't blame the school for not giving him a dorm, since he applied like in February, but he keeps whining about people being stuck up and the professors not caring about the students. He's thinking of dropping out and maybe coming back later, but meh. I wouldn't consider MSU unless it's the only choice for your major (from what I hear).

funkdoc

Thanks for the input. It's not his only option, but is in state for us and a much easier burden financially. It also doesn't hurt that it's only a couple hours away and the folks in the department have been very helpful so far. What is your friends major? Appreciate any more details you can offer as you get them.

It was something business related if I remember correctly. He's a really smart guy with very good grades (went to school with him for 2 years) and the only reason he didn't get into a better school was because of his carelessness. His GC did all his applications and just told him to write an essay. I hope this helps. It's all I know.

I friends' son went to the New School's jazz program. Loved it. He was a pretty gifted musician and went to a high school with an excellent jazz program before going to New School.
