Hey guys! So Im new to this forum and I just joined because I have a bit of a dilemma and I need to hear other people’s opinions besides a guidance counselor. So I was accepted into AMDA’s 2 year Integrated Musical Theatre program, but was not accepted into Montclair’s bfa MT program. Montclair is my #1, and I like the school much better than AMDA. I still like AMDA a lot though. Ive read the things about that school online, and have heard the negative things people have had to say about it. So here’s my problem, do I commit to AMDA even though it might not possible be the best program out there for me, or do I commit to Montclair and risk re-auditioning and possibly not getting into to the program? I’m ready to financially commit within the next two weeks
Though not impossible, I’ve heard that the chances of getting in after being rejected at Montclair are not super high. So I’d go with the sure thing.
Hello
My daughter is finishing her 4th semester(and last) at AMDA. She chose AMDA for a variety of reasons and she ended up loving it. She took each class deadly seriously and felt she made some good connections and friends. She is starting to audition now and has a somewhat flexible theater -related job for the summer. Her AMDA credits will transfer to the New School, if she decides to transfer and she will go in as a Junior and get a BFA from there. She commuted to AMDA and had a scholarship and a grant, which made it a pretty affordable way to go. For all the negative press about AMDA, she has mostly good things to say…especially about teachers.
My son was accepted to Montclair State MT for 2017. We attended their Theater Day in March and I sat in on a Q&A with Kim Whitman and Clay James. They did say it would be a better plan to get some good solid training for a year and then audition again than to go in as a BA thinking you have a better chance of being accepted to the MT program because you are already in the school. They said that is not really the way it works. I hope this is helpful.
If taken seriously, AMDA offers some solid training. All the best …whatever you decide.
Thank you so much for your input! I’ve decided to commit to AMDA, so excited!
