Mopeds at UCSD?

I don't see any topics covering this on CC so here goes. I've been using public transportation all my life, but I lived in Los Angeles all my life. I know public transit is a different story at La Jolla. I honestly do not want a car commitment, but I need something that's going to be able to get me to and from UCSD off-campus to Mission Beach and Kearny Mesa.

Are mopeds a good idea? Do people even ride mopeds in SD?

You’d probably get a few more responses on the main UCSD forum on college confidential, as opposed to here where the general topic tends to be UC transfer admissions.

Anyway, I’ve seen a few mopeds here in various parking lots around campus. Strangely, in the last four months I’ve been here I can’t recall seeing anyone riding one, but if they’re parked on campus obviously people are using them. Another option may be a bus pass. Students can get a discounted MTS bus pass at $47 per quarter and those bus routes go all around the San Diego area. In addition, UCSD students get a sticker on their ID card that allow them to get on select MTS routes that to the areas just around La Jolla/UTC.

I’m technically a “commuter” because I live off campus. However, I can’t say that my experience can help all that much as I live about 2 miles from campus and there’s a free shuttle that goes around every 10 mins in the immediate areas surrounding campus.
MTS sucks!

Trust me, I have to take it for the past two years. Late buses, overcrowding, and the smell is unbearable. It’s definitely one of the worse public transit system in CA.

Get a ride with your friends or get a rental.

^Haha, I’ve only really taken the 201/202 around University City/UTC and the 30 to the La Jolla Shores area, but the buses along those routes always seemed fine to me. I’d say generally all the buses headed up to UCSD in the morning or away from UCSD around mid-afternoon are really crowded regardless of the route. The local city shuttles just around UTC are packed absolutely full in the mornings. That said, I can’t really comment on what’s it’s like commuting from anywhere as far as Mission Beach. And if you’re commuting that far I can see why you wouldn’t want to deal with the hassle of using MTS transportation.

Get a long board.

While long boards are a fairly popular option for getting around campus, I don’t think anyone’s going to want to be long boarding 12 miles to campus every day. Maybe if it were all down hill?
