What if it was busy work?

No difference. I guess it's an idiosyncracy of mine.

^must be. impressive word by the way, you must be very intelligent. though it's actually "idiosyncrasy".

I have cheated on HW before. I always felt bad afterwards, but I still did it.

Will I do it again? I hope not, and I will try not to, but I can't say for sure.

Just being honest here.

HoldenMCaulfield,
You're right; I made a typo, how embarrassing... do forgive a mostly self-taught not-at-all-native English speaker?

ha ya sorry, im usually not lame enough to point out typos but i was in a fairly bad mood when i did.

i must say im really surprised hardly anyone has posted saying they have copied/do occasionally copy. maybe those who do are too afraid to admit so...

There is never the excuse that you can't do homework. You can always make time for it. In fact, no excuses should ever be made. To "cheat" on a homework assignment is simply cheating my own education. If I "borrowed" the homework assignment from a friend who was willing to do so and I were to read up on the content for that homework assignment afterwards, then I don't see any moral issues there for me. But rest assured, I will never have to be in that situation anyway because I value my education greatly and take courses I actually enjoy. Therefore, I make time for homework and never will run into the situation of having to copy off of someone else. And this is all, of course, assuming that the professor won't recognize the strong similarity between the two assignments submitted.

^I agree completely.

thisyearsgirl: "I have no trouble with being dishonest in other areas of my life, but my work is really something I take pride in..."

if you are going to be honest, be honest in all aspects of your life. if you are not going to be honest in all aspects of your life, don't lecture about honesty.

When was I lecturing? I stated my opinion... I never claimed I'm perfect; I know I'm far from it. I could probably win awards for self-loathing.

I've no trouble with telling either white lies or selective truths, but I don't make a habit of that either. Better?

I'd really prefer not to argue, if that's all right with you.

i have failed students for a course for cheating on a 10 point assignment. it's not worth it, kids!

I missed the time limit for editing by a few seconds, so here's an addition...

I thought about it more, and realized I'm actually a brutally honest person... I lie to my parents about the amount of work I have because I don't want them to worry or nag, and I lie to my teachers about how things are at home because they'd send me to the counselor if I told them the truth... but that's really the only thing.

Am I free to lecture now? ;)

wbow - that's lame as hell. cheating on a ten point assignment??? that's such a small mistake, and you feel fine failing them in the class for it? i dont think id be able to sleep at night if i were you. thats the lamest b u l l s h i t ive ever heard. go kill yourself. thanks.

thisyearsgirl:
the answer to your question: it depends, you added: "I thought about it more, and realized I'm actually a brutally honest person... I lie to my parents about the amount of work I have because I don't want them to worry or nag, and I lie to my teachers about how things are at home because they'd send me to the counselor if I told them the truth... but that's really the only thing."
but you admitted: ""I've no trouble with telling either white lies or selective truths, but I don't make a habit of that either. Better?"

just wondering if your addition is a selective truth (i.e. leaving other instances of dishonesty out)

holden: he's just giving advice, there's no need to use bad words and put spaces in between the letters of those naughty words.

I wrote the bit about white lies and selective truths, THEN thought about it in more depth and realized that well, actually, I almost never lie. I have lied before, in my life (as most of us have, I assume), and I know that at some point I'm likely to do it again... but I've never cheated on homework, and I don't intend to change that. This is absolute, unedited truth.

It's not a big deal, I do it all the time but i always make sure I learn the subject material later at a more convenient date. Remember, you may be able to cheat but you must actualy know your stuff in oder to perform well on a test. The ends indeed justify the means and your grade at the end does reflect how knowledgeable you are about the content covered in a class.

I wouldn't make a habit of copying and cheating, but if you do it sparingly or even occasioanally, then I would go ahead and even endorse the practice. After all, moral infractions of this kind are some of the least important ones and time management. Try to make your life as stress-free as possible without denying yourself a good education!!!:)

Well, I also bring up the topic, because I'm under the impression that though honesty is always best, there are times when it's almost "necessary" to lie to get ahead (not in school but in the real world). Nonetheless, I'm certain that being successful doesn't necessarily mean you have to be a business shark.

However, if it was the difference between making $100,000 and $500,000 per year, what would you do? I doubt many have been in this situation, and any evaluation of this hypothetical situation would be tenuous, but really, what would you do? There have been environmentalists who work for corporations that continue to pollute the environment heavily. I bring this up, because people will preach.. but not practice. Please do not ask me for any specific names, for this was just a discussion topic during class the other day, but I hope I'm getting my point across by using this example.

"Try to make your life as stress-free as possible without denying yourself a good education!!!" - i couldnt agree more, and i think others could benefit from taking your advice. well put.

elizabeth - i think there was, in fact, a need for bad words in a response to wbow, and therefore i used some. copying a ten point assignment does not warrant a punishment that can drastically change the type of college one can end up at. i will use all the bad words i want when i find someone's actions to be completely ridiculous.

"There have been environmentalists who work for corporations that continue to pollute the environment heavily. I bring this up, because people will preach.. but not practice."

Perhaps they realize that if they were not there, a person with a more carefree view towards the environment would be there. Sorry if that seems like a stretch.

"if it was the difference between making $100,000 and $500,000 per year"

It is hard for me to tell how I would act. I would like to think I would hold to my values; however, such hypotheticals are irrevelent as virtue is tested by practice not planning.

if it is the second time i catch them, i don't care if it's a 10 pt assignment or the final exam. i sleep ok at night. i wonder how they sleep?
