I received communications today from both Chapman U and Dodge College stating that all GPAs are weighted. The two lower level Dodge College office personals staff apologized for originally passing on to me incorrect information regarding their GPAs being unweighted. Dodge College’s GPA is weighted on a 5.0 scale, which is calculated by the Office of Admissions.

If a student’s high school GPA is not on the 5.0 scale, the Office of Admissions takes into account the classes on the student’s transcript and recalculates it to fit their 5.0 scale.

What peaked my interest in this question besides being to correctly inform high school students regarding the difficulty of being accepted at Dodge College & Chapman U originally was the coincidence of the weighted 3.71 GPA for Main campus 2011 (see below) and Dodge College unweighted 3.71 for 2012 admitted students (both having 3.71 GPA values). Dodge College told me in their communication today that it is coincidental that Dodge College’s GPA and the University’s GPA are the exact same.

[Undergraduate Admission FAQs | Chapman University](<a href=“Page Not Found | Chapman University”>Undergraduate Frequently Asked Questions | Dodge College | Chapman University) states the following:
What are the average SAT and GPA scores for admitted students?
For fall of 2011, our average freshman GPA was 3.71 and average SAT was 1940. We highly value the academic aptitude of each applicant and weigh these academic measures into our evaluation of every file in addition to your other department application materials.

Using weighted GPAs is common at most Universities in the USA. In previous posts I have stated: When Universities state the average GPA of their admits on their websites we do not know if it is weighted or unweighted GPA. I think that many/most state the weighted GPA to show that they that they are selective, top notch and have very smart students in their freshman class. Thus if they have admitted you, you and your parents should feel good about you (as their child) and this fine University that they are about to pour a lot of money into.

Thanks for posting this. Interesting.

This is good news!! Our daughter got into this highly competitive program!! We are proud new ‘Panther Parents’!!
