<p>What colleges are doing is not that different from what happens in public and corporate life. If you do certain things outside of the workplace, you might get fired for it even though you were on your own time. Teachers have been fired by school districts because of their pages on social networking sites. You can even lose your job for smoking; even though it’s not done at work.</p>
<p>Colleges do not have jurisdiction but they can have a code of conduct with conduct including behavior off-campus.</p>
<p>I’m not making a value judgment on drinking - I don’t recall that many issues in the good old days on campus.</p>
