More Deferred and Denied this year?

I’ve heard and read here that ppl feel that selective schools have deferred and denied more than usual this year. From what I have seen this year compared to prior years, I am sensing this as well. Anyone feel similarly and/or what do you contribute that to? Thx.

If the number of applicants goes up, and the number of students accepted stays constant, then by definition, the number of applicants deferred/denied must go up. Most colleges, although they could accept more EA/ED, will limit the percentage until they see the RD applications

That certainly makes sense. Just feel more to it this year but perhaps increased applications is simply the case.

if the EA and ED applicant numbers are going up, could just be shifting from RD to EA/ED since it’s generally assumed advantageous. I thought I read that high school US graduates have peaked.???

The number of high school grads may have peaked, but more grads are applying to college, and to more schools, plus there areinternational applicants. I would not expect a decrease in applications anytime soon.

The curse of 2nd half of the Year of the Golden Dragons!

^ I was wrong. It is flat 2018 to 2019, but will go up again in 2020 so even that is temporary. I do think most schools and even most elite ones cap their international acceptances to <10% of the school population so US applicants are somewhat independent of that pool.

While true, few colleges provide breakdown of demographics for EA/ED.

That may be part of it, but for some of the popular schools, even if the RD apps don’t increase by the same percentage as ED/EA, they’ll still increase. I just think it’s more people applying for the top colleges, even if the total college applications remain fairly constant.
