More difficult to get into certain majors at UW??

Hello!

I am applying to UW Seattle this year, and I really want to get in. Ideally, my top major would be Business Administration, but I understand that it’s a much harder major to get into than some others (I would also be interested in Environmental Studies or Spanish, both less selective majors).

The website and application instructions are making it very unclear to me - it says that major will not affect admission, but it also says that some majors are more competitive than others. Foster has a Freshman Direct program, but students who aren’t accepted will be considered as pre-major students.

So I guess my question is this: If I apply to the Business Administration major, do not get in to the Freshman Direct program, and am considered as a “pre-major,” will my chances of getting into the university be smaller than if I apply to, say, Environmental Studies?

Thanks in advance.

(In case this helps answer my question: I am from California, I have a 3.8 UW GPA at one of the top public schools in CA, I have a 750 reading score and 690 math score on the new SAT, I have solid extracurriculars and good essays).

Now don’t quote me on this but I think you would still go through the same application process and your chances would be the same as anyone else. If you didn’t get into your major then you would get general admission and then reapply for the foster school of business later. I think there is a post somewhere on this forum that person made about not getting into the business program but getting into the university of Washington.

I agree. I think what they’re saying is you can get into the school without getting into your major, and the major you applied for shouldn’t affect your chances for general admission to the school. Ex, you don’t have higher chances for general admissions if you choose enviro sci over business administration. Like I think they’re saying they can’t “discriminate” based on major preference. Hope that helps clear it up.
